ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— Premier and Minister for Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has offered high praise for the work of Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool, who many in the community are backing to become the next local Commissioner of Police and the first female to be confirmed to the position.

Addressing a press engagement to provide an update on the implementation of the reforms of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on May 9, 2025, Premier Wheatley disclosed that he could not comment on the petition by a group of concerned citizens lobbying for Ms Vanterpool's appointment as substantive Commissioner of Police.

The Premier explained that the matter will be an agenda item for the National Security Council, “so I can't pre-empt any decision that we would have to make on that particular level.”

He was, nonetheless, in support of Ms Vanterpool's performance thus far, telling media operatives, “Let me just say, I've been very impressed with the work that Acting Commissioner Vanterpool has done since she took the helm.”

We need to focus

Qualifying his position further, he noted, “There have been a number of recoveries of weapons. You've seen a greater presence of police on the streets. I was very impressed in terms of how she dealt with the cruise ships that came in and all of the police presence that was needed there. Some of the mass gatherings that took place there. And she's figured out some results. I've been pleased with her engagement with the public.”

As such, Premier Wheatley used the opportunity to reiterate a longstanding position on the need to develop local leadership within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and other law enforcement bodies, rather than continually relying on foreign appointees.

“I've made it very clear in the House of Assembly that I don't think it's an effective strategy to always have persons come from the outside, they spend a short period of time in the Virgin Islands and then they leave. You have persons who come to the Virgin Islands, they get lots of training opportunities, and then they leave and they take all of that training to their next job.”

As such, he implored that the Virgin Islands needs “a strategy for the law enforcement, where we build capacity here; That all of those persons who are coming up through the ranks can see themselves one day being a Commissioner of Police; I don't think we've done an effective job of succession planning. We haven't done a good job of building capacity in the past, and that's something that I believe that we need to focus on.”

Vanterpool doing ‘a fantastic job’- Governor

There have been concerns that the Governor is looking to recruit another UK national for the job instead of hiring a Virgin Islander like Vanterpool.

Governor Pruce has said he is confident in the Acting Commissioner of Police but stopped short of saying whether or not she is being eyed for the position permanently.

While a guest on Talking Points on Monday, January 27, 2025, on ZBVI 780 AM, Governor Pruce said he was working closely with Vanterpool, who he thinks is doing a “fantastic job”.

These black out rentals is a serious problem when they Drive pass you the scent, the fume of illegal drunks coming out of them, only God knows what they carrying. The No helmet speeding mopeds...Police need to start working for their salary like every other cirizen, driving up and down in a Police jeep is not an effeective solution. Police getting a past, free money, time for us to see their worth...Leadership matters.

The problem is you would have been even if she had been no good. You just have agendas to push. This time we lucky and it seems she is doing a great job. Let's hope she is not just getting a lot of help others did not get to skew things for her and that she really is making a difference.

just need to get the illegal tint off those car windows (and find out what corruption is going on to get therm through the DMV tests) and get scooters off he roads and guns out of glove compartments and we will be on the way.

Then customs need to get out on the water and do routine stops and have a prescence on our entry routes, once we have cleared out the bad apples fascilitating that business.

Same at Ports. Best not give Oleanvine her job back.

Stop all the dark out vehicles! They driving through town like nothing. Early morning movements and sometimes during thr day. They moving through the hills and back roads cuz no one is stopping them and they know they could. And when you do the stop and search, don't stay there to long switch up cuz ppl telling other ppl where not to go. Ppl turning around their vehicles and ting.

The Ministry of Communications really need to crack down on all these black out tinted rentals in this place. It puzzles me as to how the companies manage to get them pass inspection with all that dark tint because the ordinary person has to take off their tint in order to get your vehicle relicensed. It’s too much double standard in this little place. The police need to stop and search all them rentals on the street every day and the marine branch need to make their presence seen on the sea. These gangsters getting away with too much and spoiling the name of the BVI.

Stop trying to cheat the system! If she is good enough she will pass a transparent and fair process. It’s not fair on her to be appointed by the recommendations of politicians - how independent is that??

You are impressed with her but its funny you have no say in Whether she would be appointed or not. That's the sad part about all this colonial drama.

If he could have a say in it then we would go right back to what we was doing. Hiring people because of family friends and connections when they don't meet the criteria or educational background for the post. not saying she doesn't mean it but it was something we was doing before but UK put a stop to that nonsense. Imagine local youths pay their personal money to finish school and come back only to see them can't get a job because someone won't family names or connection get the post with them highschool diploma. Comical

Recruiting the right Commissioner is essential, no other person (through their office) has the power to do so much good, or indeed bad, to the average citizen. It shouldn't therefore be a decision made on heritage, gender or other characteristic, it should be on merit. We collectively need the individual who has the tenacity and morale values to tackle serious and organised crime, wherever that may be present, whilst also addressing hidden harm and anti-social behaviour, such as the noisy motorbikes speeding the streets all day long! They must have the humility to accept that they and their staff will get things wrong and to put such things right, they must be able to unite the force and build a open, supportive and caring culture, but most of all, they have to recognise that they serve the public, that's all the public, not just those with political power. Police officers serve without fear or favour, let's hope that those who are on the selection panel are able to do the same.
