ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Class of 1992 of the BVI High School now Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), has blasted the action by Government for not giving a rationale for its decision to not have Bevis Sylvester be the keynote speaker at the ESHS graduation and claim they were being subjected to what they deem to be “distasteful, dishonest and draconian conduct”.

It was first brought to light on June 26, 2012 by Virgin Islands News Online that there was controversy surrounding the Class’ selection of Sylvester to be the keynote speaker of the ESHS graduation which was rejected by Government.

It is traditional for the class of 20 years ago to organise the graduation ceremony and select the keynote speaker among other things. Sylvester, the Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum and from the Class of '92 was selected by his peers for carrying out the task.

In the end, Sylvester was replaced by Pastor Gregory George of the Class of 1995 of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre as keynote speaker at the graduation held on June 28, 2012.

In a statement issued by the Class of 1992, they said Sylvester’s name along with persons for other roles in the graduation exercise were selected by the Class and forwarded to the school’s administration five weeks before graduation. According to the statement, the school received the suggestions with “favour, without hesitation and without any indication that the names submitted were inappropriate or undesirable.”

However, the Class claimed it was only five days before the graduation that they were told their choice of keynote speaker would be unsuitable to fulfil the role “he was democratically chosen to perform”.

“The reasons for this impromptu position have still not been made clear to us. After trying to ascertain the rationale for this decision and being subjected to what we deem to be distasteful, dishonest and draconian conduct.”

The class said it was then that they “collectively and respectfully” communicated their desire to relinquish any duties on graduation day outside of those that required direct interaction with the students; hence the decision was taken to only participate in the distribution of student awards. “The Class of 1992 stands resolutely by this decision in order to register our collective displeasure for the manner in which we, adults and contributing members of this community were treated while also emphasizing our focus on the graduating students and their accomplishments.”

Meanwhile, the Class further stated that the their participation in the graduation exercises has always been with the aim of supporting and recognising the efforts of the hard-working graduates and their families, and it was for that reason primarily they did not want to respond to allegations and misrepresentations regarding their role in the graduation activities prior to now.

“And now that the youth of this community have been duly celebrated, we wish to continue being role models and examples to them by telling the truth.”

“During this entire experience, we, as representatives of our families, our alma mater (the BVI High School) and our community (the Virgin Islands), have made every effort to carry out our business in a professional and courteous manner. We sought to demonstrate to this year’s graduating students the importance of ideals such as industry, prudence, respect, integrity and more so forgiveness. Perhaps both the Classes of 2012 and 1992, through this experience, have learned hard but valuable life lessons; but the Class of 1992 stands firmly on the ideals and principles that were instilled in us as students of the BVI High School, even if we are standing alone. We wish the Elmore Stoutt High School Graduating Class of 2012 every success as they set forth on new journeys in education and/or employment, and we pray God’s continued blessings on our Virgin Islands.”

I waiting for the Ministers' rebuttal in this case. They must defend themselves or else they acknowledge what they did was wrong.

They can pretend only for so long......only a matter of time.......Lord it is my prayer that you provide the right people to run my little country. Please Lord, please provide the type of government who are not about self gain and please provide the type of government who can bring about unity instead of this kind divisiveness............

we the people of the BVI fully support the class of 1992 with their choice and Bevis to speak....his speech would have been more geared towards reality and not some church pie in the sky crap...

I am elated that the Class of 1992 decided to speak out about this. For to long we have been too passive. The last time I checked our type of governance is democracy. It's about time we stand up and be heard.

I wish your comment was only true because this one is petty. If the members of Government would take your advise and they too would start talking - Oh what a morning. It is true that this is a democratic society and we should learn to speak up. Lets start with members of Government speaking up about their findings when they take office.

If this happened like they say it did, then that's not good. I hope to hear the Government side for if they remain quiet then we know they're wrong for how it was handled. I read Bevis' speech on the other site and it was a good one. Ah boy, another distraction and for what? This could've been dealt with better man.

1992 was given the privilege of assisting with the plans. They were not given the RIGHT to have their plans approved. Graduation ceremonies are the property of the government for all public schools and falls under the Ministry. The Ministry has the last say. They nor many of you may not like the Ministry's decision, but such is life. Y'all making a big deal about nothing! Trying to make everything political.

You are absolutely correct. ESHS is a public High school and as such Government has a right to decide who can and cannot speak at the graduation. I don't see the big deal with Bevis speech. Believe me those children not interested in any long speech irregardless to whom delivers it. So let it rest and move on.

You are quite right LB. Everything is political these days. I wonder why buddy. Why is this such a big deal. Is Government suppose to say "yes" to everyone's ideas then we would not be a democratic society. That would certainly be a dictatorshop. Plans are suppose to be approved or disapproved and in this case it was not approved - so what. The class of 1992 aint speaking up. This is a one man speaking his grievances.

This issue is much bigger than any bloggers have touched upon as yet. I am certainly no fan of Bevis’. Regardless of that fact, I do not believe that any government official has the right to interfere with a school tradition and DICTATE who may or may not be a keynote speaker at ANY event. Freedom of speech, freedom of choice and FREEDOM to do as we see fit, is what we are discussing! Whether you believe Bevis was the right choice or not has no bearing on the matter. The fact remains that our government saw fit to DICTATE to the people who could and could not speak at the graduation ceremony. We do not live in red China, Syria or Libya. We live in a democracy with ELECTED representatives ~ not under a dictatorship! Regardless of what anyone thinks of Bevis, the fact that a government official used his power to dictate to the class of 1992 who they could NOT appoint as the keynote speaker for this year’s graduating class, is indicative of the type of leadership we have chosen ~ and in my opinion, it is frightening! Unless the people stand up to be counted, the government will continue to strong arm us, push through projects we neither want nor agree with and they will try to interfere in more and more aspects of our daily lives. I am almost certain that had government officials had the opportunity, they would have tried to prevent the class of 1992 from making the truth known. I also believe the choice to decline comment to this newspaper is particularly arrogant, though not surprising. Whilst several of our elected representatives have the best interests of the BVI at heart, I believe some have allowed themselves to get caught up in and warped by their power. This is a democratic society. I urge everyone to keep that first and foremost in your thoughts and to remind your elected representatives of that fact when they overstep their bounds. Cherish your freedoms! Freedom was a hard won status for all British Virgin Islanders and one which we need to defend at every opportunity ~ even against our own.

This is not the first time a reccomendation for speaker has been rejected and I guarantee it will not be the last. Mr. Sylvester will have many opportunities to pontificate at a podium in the future. However, it is good that his speech was published because I can say with conviction that Pastor Gregory's was BETTER! I am sure most of the graduates will remember FOR A LONG TIME what he said and it was delivered with gusto - even at that late hour! He got their attention from beginning to end. Ask them%&^!!!
