Hon Skelton dismisses cruise pier detractors!
He was speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday July 14, 2015 during the debate on the Tourist Duty Free System Act of 2015.
"Madam Speaker all of this that we are doing here did not come without its detractors and the detractors are still around," he said.
"We need to understand that we who are here managing the affairs of the country most do so in the interest of the majority of people. We must listen to those who had concerns but at the end of the day a decision must be made to do what is good and right for this country Madam Speaker," he said.
He applauded the idea that the territory was moving towards establishing duty free areas as the Premier, who is the subject Minister, sees fit.
Hon Skelton said the definition duty free shopping means retail outlet exempted from the payment of certain local or national taxes and duties with the requirement that the goods sold will be sold to travellers who will take them out of the country.
He said that a level of duty free shopping has been happening in the territory for some time.
"Any goods that are sent out of this country to any other jurisdiction the customs usually gives you back the duty that was paid on those goods," he said.
He said that the passage of the Bill, the territory will be able to compete on a more equitable basis with the Us Virgin Islands and Sint Maarten which are territories that have well established duty free zones.
Throughout the campaign trail, the Virgin Islands Party’s members have been blasting the Government over the project for what they call lack of transparency with the spending of monies for it. However the party always made it clear that in principle it was not against the project as it was seen as needed.
