GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- Residents of Jost van Dyke will soon have the opportunity to attend H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) without having to travel to Tortola.

This was disclosed by Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) while speaking at the Opening Ceremony for the new Jost van Dyke Primary School on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

“I am pleased to announce that the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College is set to establish a satellite campus right here at this location,” Hon de Castro stated.

Accessing ‘higher education’

According to the Minister, this means that residents of Jost van Dyke will soon have the opportunity to access higher education, specialised training, and certification without the need to travel far.

“This is a significant step towards providing our community with broader educational opportunities and ensuring that individuals can acquire the skills and knowledge needed for personal and professional growth,” Hon de Castro stated.

HLSCC seeking to utilise room @ new JVD school- Dr Richard W. Georges

Meanwhile, President of HLSCC Dr Richard W. Georges said the institution will not have a full campus as in Virgin Gorda.

"We are looking to use a room in the facility for particular courses targeting the JvD community. We will be seeking to survey residents to determine their greatest training needs.

"We aim to do the same in Anegada," Dr Richards disclosed.

HSCC, established in 1990, is primarily Government-sponsored and has its main campus at Paraquita Bay and a smaller centre on Virgin Gorda.

Would it be more cost effective to subsidize the JVD's student population attendance at HLSCC main campus? just thinking out aloud!!

I’m assuming that it will be remotely so the students will be in class via smart board/camera to the classes at Paraquita Bay Campus.

And if that's the case that would truly be progressive and I would be in full support.

Does Jost Van Dyke have a high school or are we going from primary school to college. This sounds like how her famous picture looks.

This speech brings back memories of the speech you gave at graduation. Wasn't the people in Anegada going to be able to do courses with HLSCC too? Still waiting.
