PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – Persons interested in marine studies and even those already in the field will now be able to learn from the professionals, as H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Marine & Maritime Studies has teamed up with MarineMax Vacations and Nanny Cay to deliver a series of technical training with marine industry dealers and manufacturers.

The courses are 8-days each in length with individual courses in Air Conditioning System Maintenance, Service and Repairs; Watermaker System Maintenance Service and Repair; Diesel Engine Maintenance Service and Repairs; Outboard Engine Maintenance Service and Repair; and Generator Maintenance Service and Repair.

The college detailed that for intermediate and advanced Marine Technicians, this is a chance to upskill their tradecraft with training direct from dealers, manufacturers, and operators of the latest in Marine Systems.

One of HLSCC's past students, Jarel E. A. Smith, a Virgin Islander with 15 years of experience in the marine industry, with 11 of those years at MarineMax Vacations, shared that the programme kicked off on August 23, 2023.

Student shares insight!

Smith shared that he was one of the first students of HLSCC's Centre for Applied Marine Studies and that he graduated from the Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Florida, having benefited from specialist training at MarineMax Vacations over the years.

Smith said the collaboration between HLSCC and local professionals in the marine industry is invaluable.

“HLSCC Marine was one building and one engine when I was there. They have grown so much since then and they are doing big things. These collaborations with MarineMax and Nanny Cay are great for our local technicians.”

“Going to school in Florida to come back and work at home, I’m really glad that these opportunities are here now, and I hope lots more Virgin Islanders and local technicians get to sign up for them in the next year,” he further told Virgin Islands News Online.

Persons interested in the course can start by filling up the Marine & Maritime Interest Form for the HLSCC Course Portfolio here.

It takes hundreds/thousands of hours to get proficient and certified as an apprentice,,master electrician and plumber, air conditioning and refrigeration tech, builder —carpenter/joiner/mason, automechanic, etc. HLSCC needs to launch a basic/foundational theory and practical series in these skill sets among others. An after hours series would be a plus for people with day jobs.

The natives have not fared well in this industry recently. While there is so much potential revenue, they continue to occupy the industry's basement. basketball stars
