PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) is excited to announce the launch of its Concrete Construction Training Programme, a unique opportunity for individuals to gain internationally recognised certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Applications for this pilot programme are ongoing, with the course set to begin on 4 November 2024. The programme is designed to prepare participants for entry-level positions in the construction industry and provide them with the essential skills needed for success.

The Concrete Construction Training Programme offers a comprehensive 24-week curriculum that combines theoretical learning and hands-on experience. Classes will be held at HLSCC's Centre for Applied Marine Studies, running from Monday to Thursday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and on Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants will receive extensive instruction in areas critical to concrete construction, such as proper techniques, safety protocols, and industry best practices. To successfully complete the programme, students must maintain a 95% attendance rate, demonstrate collaboration, punctuality, and display a positive attitude towards learning.

Head of Technical Studies at HLSCC, Ms. Cecelia Rowe, expressed her excitement for the programme and its potential impact on the local workforce.

"This training initiative represents a significant step toward building a skilled workforce in our community. We are committed to providing our students with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in the construction industry, ensuring they are well-prepared for future opportunities," Rowe stated.

Participants will undergo computerised exams and hands-on performance profiles at the conclusion of each training module, ensuring a rigorous evaluation of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Upon successful completion, participants will earn internationally recognised NCCER certification, 8 college credits, and an HLSCC Certificate of Completion. This programme is open to both males and females aged 18 and older, and is an excellent pathway for those seeking to build a strong foundation in the construction industry.

In addition to certification, partial scholarships are available to BVIslanders and Belongers to assist with the cost of training, making this programme even more accessible to the local population. HLSCC encourages interested individuals to apply early, as spaces are limited.

For more information or to apply, please contact Ms. Cecelia Rowe at (284) 852-7182 or email crowe@hlscc.edu.vg. Alternatively, you can reach Jaheim Maduro at (284) 852-7176 or via email at jmaduro@hlscc.edu.vg.

Participants can expect classroom training in state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring they are well-equipped for the demands of the construction industry. This programme is a unique opportunity for aspiring professionals to gain valuable skills and certification, propelling them into a promising career in construction.

Please place caps on the ends of the rebars. This something that should be drilled into the heads of local contractors in order to prevent serious injuries to workers.

Too right…Don’t forget fall protection. There is also potential for airborne silica dust (recognized lung cancer hazard) when grinding concrete.
