ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) will be revamping the VI/USVI vaccine bubble initiative after a large number of persons have indicated an interest in another vaccine option outside of the locally offered AstraZeneca vaccine.

This is according to Virgin Islands Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) who said, “After the initiative closed off we still had a large number of persons interested in the programme.”

More opportunities to get vaccinated - Hon Malone

“This is yet another opportunity for families to get access to the lifesaving COVID-19 vaccination. Through this collaboration with the USVI, persons will have access to the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines,” Honorable Malone said in a statement released on November 1, 2021.

In the last programme, some 65 adults and 169 children were able to benefit from the vaccine bubble initiative with the USVI.

However, with the revamp of the service, persons will now be responsible for their own transportation to and from the USVI, whether it will be in a private vessel or using a water taxi where vaccination will only be done on Wednesdays between 1:00 p.m -4:00 pm, the Minister said.

“We are still relaxing protocols for persons who follow the rules and remain in the bubble of the initiative. Failure to comply will result in quarantine according to the usual protocols,” the minister went on to say.

To register for the newly revamped programme, persons are being asked to visit the Government website at www.bvi.gov.vg and complete the BVI-USVI Vaccination Bubble registration form and email the form to ministryofhealth@gov.vg along with the necessary supporting documents for processing.

New steps to register for the initiative

Applicants are expected to have a valid passport and immigration requirements to enter the USVI and must be able to fund all costs associated with getting the vaccine, including transportation and logistical costs.

“Register with the USVI Department of Health by visiting www.COVID19usvi.com/vaccines to secure an appointment. Supporting documents should also include proof of a confirmed appointment with the U.S.V.I. Department of Health,” a release on the initiative further noted.

Persons are also being required to Register with the USVI Travel Portal for approval to enter Cruz Bay, St. John by visiting https://www.usvitravelportal.com and a rapid COVID-19 test must be administered ONE day before travel to St. John and uploaded to the portal.

“An application must be submitted for each person traveling to St John and Travellers MUST present a Green QR Code to Governmental Officials on arrival in St. John, evidencing approval to enter the USVI.”

Will this be open to people seeking a booster shot?

Some say that you guys will need every booster to stay among the living because your immune system is destroyed

If I am fully vaccinated now, and want to travel abroad next June, will I have to be revaccinated again and get the booster? I feel this will be too much for my system since I am a senior citizen.

The thing that could be too much for your system, would being exposed to Covid without having had the booster. As seniors, our immune systems are more susceptible to infection.
I remember having to booster shots, as a kid, for childhood illness. The new variants of the new corona virus are more infectious. So having to have a booster doesn’t surprise me.

If you are encouraging persons to get vaccinated for the health and well being of a community in its entirety then this is actually a deterrent and not a means of relaxing protocols. There should be a ferry to and from USVI on specific days for the vaccination bubble whereby citizens can pay for ferry tickets to be vaccinated. Persons having to charter a sea vessel privately is expensive and hence a deterrent to encourage vaccination. There are some persons that have been reluctant to be vaccinated prior and have now after seeing the success of vaccination with booster shots available with US vaccines and should be allowed a easy path to become vaccinated. The way to encourage doubtful citizens to become vaccinated is not by chastising them but by encouraging them and constantly educating them. The more citizens vaccinated the healthier the community on a whole. The health minister dropped the ball on this one. This is not a transparent process.
