ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Digicel BVI is planning to roll out a Fibre Optic Network in the VI which will bring world class internet and television service to homes across the Territory.

Digicel’s New Business Liaison Executive Sandra A. Massicote is urging owners of apartment buildings to contact her if they are interested in getting this service.

Speaking to this news site in an exclusive interview on August 10, 2015, Massicote said, “It is going to be fibre so the quality is going to better than what we are accustomed to with the current internet and television service that we have. We are coming out with hundreds of channels and reliable and world class internet service.”

“So it is definitely exciting. It is definitely something that we are not used to here. Just to make the roll out a little easier what I am doing right now is contacting all landlords and property managers with multi-dwelling units. For those particular properties we need to install a small device no bigger than a shoebox which will go in the utility shed or on the building so that when we launch, the individual occupants of the property can be hooked up very easily,” she said.

She said too that persons will have the option to rewind TV shows or record programmes that might be on while the subscriber is away. “If you forget to do that from home you can set it from your smartphone and then you could rewind and play it over,” she said, adding that persons will also be able to rewind live TV. “So if you get up to use the bathroom or you are in the kitchen and you miss something you can go back and actually rewind live TV,” said Miss Massicote.

Cost of the service

She said people can expect to pay rates that are within their comfort zone for higher quality service.

“If landlords want to have that option for their clients they need to contact me so that we would have them in our rolling out process,” she said, noting that surveyors will come to set up the required infrastructure.

Massicote said that the cost of the service will be very competitive and that without an earlier indication, persons will have a longer wait if they don’t have the necessary equipment installed upfront on their property.

Persons can call Sandra A. Massicote on 300 2009 or email at bvirecharge@digicelgroup.com to ensure their property is included in the final network design.

Where is this fibre going to be run over head or underground. If you have not run the fibre how ca you promise year end. Building your network takes time.

Maybe they're going to branch off someone that already has fibre ran throughout the contract. i.e LIME and/or Cable TV.

Most likely, yes. People don't know this, but Digicel actually uses some of C&W reception towers. I'm sure for some sort of rate.

They'll probably use LIME's existing fibre lines and pay a rental fee for their use.

As long as 80% of the stations are not in Spanish for an English speaking country they got my vote.

How do you try to stay relevant when your competitor launches LTE and you don't have product that can nearly compete???

I had been wondering why the internet speed on my USB dongle had suddenly dropped 2-3 weeks ago (after over a year of having it). You connect and it's at 4G; you open a browser and try to navigate to anywhere and it drops to 2G and remains there. Help desk is no help, although they are polite. Technical support (based in St. Lucia) won't let you get past the reception if you call them directly (they tell you to dial 100, but can't transfer you themselves apparently; also you NEVER get a call-back). It now makes sense why: frustrate existing customers enough in the hope they will consider switching to an 'upgrade'.My question is this: if not enough landlords subscribe in advance to the investment *ahem*, sorry, 'rolling-out' process, will you have enough capital to put proper fibreoptics infrastructure in place regardless?

Digicel is making a good move in the right direction with bringing fiber optic and tv to the BVI, but it is going to take them a while to do so. If lime is taking ages just to complete there fiber optic network, what is going to happen in Digicel case and also you guys can say good bye to CCT but who know's

If Digicel is going to using lime's fiber optic cables doesn't that mean their service is going to be more expensive than lime's because of the rental fee?

That's the part i don't get, how do you be competitive with pricing if at the end of the day you have to piggy back your service off the competition? By default your rates are automatically higher is it not?
  • Kermit (14/08/2015, 09:35) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
Well from you see CCT Charging $300 for average standard internet you kinda have a better sense of what value for dollar is in the BVI.. Imma stick with lime, the lesser evil when it comes to residential internet service and pricing.. As for my tv viewing needs, i have Hulu plus, Netflix and a handful of streaming services to choose from... So yea, i'm good.. lol

For years i had lime their internet got so bad on vg so me and seven others that i know switch to cct what a mistake now for days at a time i can not view my surveillance system without majour interuption and going to the office is a joke now if all three provider will be using the same fiber system who will be better those who are hitching a ride or the one with the vehicle and the other question is who will pay more for that ride the vehicle owner or the hitch hikers...
