Ereia Smith makes history as VI's 1st NACAC-certified technical manager
According to a Facebook post by the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA), Smith has become the first official from the Virgin Islands to earn the prestigious Technical Manager designation under the standards of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) and World Athletics. She was among 28 officials from across the NACAC region to complete the certification programme.
VI Athletics added that the certification formally qualifies Smith to inspect competition facilities, manage and inspect competition implements and equipment, and oversee athletics events at the regional and international levels. The course is designed to prepare technical managers to apply World Athletics’ competition and technical rules and regulations effectively at athletics competitions.
Major step for VI Athletics
BVI Athletics Association President Steve Augustine described Smith’s achievement as an important advancement for the sport in the Virgin Islands.
“This is a significant step forward for athletics in the Virgin Islands,” Augustine said. “Having our first NACAC-certified Technical Manager strengthens our ability to deliver world-class competitions and support the continued growth of the sport.”
Strengthening regional representation
The NACAC Technical Managers Certification Course brought together officials from throughout the North American, Central American and Caribbean region, providing specialised training in the technical administration of athletics competitions.
Smith’s certification enhances the Territory’s representation in the technical and officiating aspects of the sport and positions VI Athletics to contribute more directly to the delivery of regional and international events.
