Eighteen graduate from Technical Institute
Eleven of the students passed each of the seven subjects while an additional three students passed six subjects; they each received certificates of completion. An additional three students that passed four subjects received a certificate of completion while another received a certificate of attendance.
Principal Germaine Scatliffe praised the students and staff of the institution for their hard work and also praised Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn for his commitment to the institution.
"We must recognise you for taking the initiative for evaluating the progress of this school and ensuring that programmes were structured to provide more meaningful certification that would facilitate the transfer of these students to secondary school leaving equivalency and any key positions in the workplace," Ms Scatliffe said.
She made an appeal to businesses in the community to give students employment and thereby give them a chance to become productive citizens.
Valedictorian Kamara Wright and Salutatorian Maybe Rodriguez were both promised gifts of iPads by Hon. Walwyn for their achievements at the institute.
Meanwhile, Hon. Walwyn, who described the Technical Institution as a pet project of his, announced that he has asked for the students to be put on a fast track to receive their high school diplomas in a year's time once they have worked hard enough and have met the necessary requirements for graduation.
"The pathway has been set for you to do this. This is nothing new, in education all across the world, fast tracked pathways are put in place to help students reach their desired goals provided they have the competencies to do so," Hon. Walwyn said.
He encouraged those persons to sign up and enter the Alternative Secondary Programme being held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
Hon. Walwyn was in particular praise of the fact that more than half of the class comprised of young men whom he described as having a desire to succeed in order to make contributions to the development of the Virgin Islands.
Minister Walwyn cited the batch of graduates as an historic group, noting that they had performed exceptionally well and were also the last class to be graduating from the institution in its present form.
"As we speak, the new school is being worked on and as a cornerstone of its development, an exceptional programme for students that are interested in the technical field will be there," he stated.
Mitch Turnbull, Roger Mactavious, Shane Winter and Terry Smith came together to make a cash donation to students for their outstanding performance.
