LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- Anyone wishing to get a strong feel of the Virgin Islands' culture during this Emancipation Festival can look no further than East End/Long Look and Carrot Bay.

Today, August 9, 2023, is the EE/LL Cultural Experience, which began this morning and ends at 7:00 PM at Greenland Field.

Among the items on offer at the event organised by the VI Communal Association (VICA) and the EE/LL Community Group are local food and drinks, craft, cultural displays, rides and entertainment by local bands.

A simple opening ceremony was held over an hour ago and saw remarks from Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), Jr Minister for Tourism and Culture Honourable Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) and Member of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8).

Dr Wheatley said the advent of technology and the rise of financial services in the Virgin Islands have brought about significant changes in the territory; however, the people must not lose sight of its history and culture.

‘What do we want as a community?’

He said the VI heritage and culture had a hand in the VI becoming a successful place.

“And so we cannot give up on our history, we cannot give up on our heritage and we cannot give up on our culture.”

Premier Wheatley also said people may be wanting to blame others for the “change” that has come about in the territory, “but we have to look at ourselves, because the question is what do we want as a community?”

Both Dr Wheatley and Hon Penn pledged to work together to bring back the Emancipation and other festivities of Long Look and East End back to their former glory.

Meanwhile, the other cultural events of the 2023 Emancipation Festival are the Fisherman's Day in Carrot Bay tomorrow, August 10, 2023, and the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta on Friday, August 11, 2023.

Aten't those stalls paying a small Fee to the committee to allow them to sell.. like $50.00. Nothing too high. Things hard for every one to helps to maintain the grounds.. I am a supporter of EELL staying alive during festival time..

A simple word like ground you can't spell. But I agree with you. That's a cricket and baseball field. Hope they don't ruin it.

This will be much bigger next year, like a hug6e food fair much more vendors.. I also like the idea or suggestion that I read where someone saying give EE Committee the Calypso show to organize for the Tuesday night..Let Road Town focus on the Soca Monarch..I think East committee will go all out to make it great, as s matter a fact it will kind of create a good spirited competition between committees to see which show is bigger and better. That's the challenge to get bigger and better in every area..

Yes, this is how festivals should look. Don't compare villages each have their own culture on display,
This is soo...much better than having those half naked, big overgrown women who think they look OK on the street. While the men are FULLY dress.

Yes! And I pray that they continue with this trend year after year (and don’t mind the talk!) the BVI needs to go back to what was the true way of this celebration. I agree with you.

Where are the people though? I don't like the idea of it being on the field. They need to earmark another suitable spot.

Congratulations to the East End committee for putting that education of those who were before us. A history that a member can go to the schools so the children can be informed of what transpired many years ago.
Those of you who talking about the cricket field I don’t see any harm done to the field. It is the perfect place to held an event of that nature.
