TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Word reaching our newsroom is that the Managing Director (MD) of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), Mr Denniston S. Fraser, has retired.

Mr Fraser has been at the helm of BVIAA since 2006, a year after the body became incorporated, in August 2005. He was also a civil servant for over 20 years.

What is the BVIAA?

The BVI Airports Authority currently manages and operates, on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI), three (3) airports and various helipads within the territory. The three (3) airports are the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, the Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda and the Auguste George Airport on Anegada.

It is unclear why Mr Fraser, who also owns a law firm, has chosen to retire at this time and efforts to get a comment from him were not successful.

The post for Managing Director of BVIAA is being advertised.

In the meantime, BVIAA Operations Manager Mr Coy W. Levons is now the acting Managing Director.

Mr Levons confirmed to our newsroom that Mr Fraser was no longer at the BVIAA and that he was acting in the capacity as MD.

New BVIAA Board

Last month, the Hon Andrew A. Fahie Administration announced a new Board of Directors, with Regional General Manager of petroleum giant, Delta Petroleum (Caribbean) Limited, Bevis S. Sylvester, as the Chairman.

Hon Fahie, the territory’s third Premier and Minister of Finance, also has the portfolio of both sea and air ports.

The BVI Airports Authority is governed by a Board of Directors headed by a Chairman, Mr Sylvester. Efforts to get a comment from Mr Sylvester were unsuccessful.

Government Body

The BVIAA’s sole shareholder is the Government of the VI and the share/s are held by, and in the name of, the Financial Secretary. Its vision and mission statement respectively are reflected in its goals of meeting or exceeding the safety and other requirements of the Air Navigation (Overseas Territories) Order 2001 and other applicable regulatory instruments; and creating an environment that fosters employee excellence, according to its webpage.
