He said this during the opening ceremony of the 72nd Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Lavida Cottoy Festiville. 

This year’s festival is being held under the theme ‘Culture Rising, Hearts Align. VI Festival, One of a Kind’ and the slogan ‘Echoes of Heritage, Rhythm in the Mix, Celebrate Virgin Islands Festival 2026’. 

“We also extend gratitude to our historians, culture bearers, and tradition keepers, who ensure that the true history of the Virgin Islands remains alive; unsanitised, unforgotten, and accessible to all.”

It is because of their work, he said, that Virgin Islanders understand where they came from, strengthening the resolve to preserve who they are. “Our Emancipation Festival is an important part of this.”

Celebrate with joy, gratitude & unity

The Premier added that he is very passionate about the Emancipation Festival, highlighting emancipation. “We must focus on the reason for these celebrations, and we must ever be reflective.”

He encouraged everyone to participate fully, support vendors, cheer on performers, encourage school children and creatives as they present their troupes, and attend cultural showcases.

“Let us fill this village with love, pride, and togetherness…as we celebrate, let us do so responsibly, look out for one another, prioritise safety, keep our community strong, and above all, let us enjoy this festival season with joy, gratitude, and unity.”
