PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - The crowd favourite Yohance T. Smith has walked away with the top prize of $10,000 to become the winner of the last staging of the Department of Youth Affair and Culture's GenY Factor singing competition 2022.

Held at the Eileen L. Parsons Auditorium at the H. Lavity Community College (HLSCC) last evening July 17, 2022, to a jampacked audience, the competition saw seven persons vying cash prize and the right to be called the GenY singing champion.

After giving it their all in the first two rounds, encore and VI flare, the panel of judges score sheet tally saw Mr Yohance Smith, Calden James, and Mya Brown advancing to the final round with all previous scores erased.

Tears after performance

Smith broke into tears after his performance further captured the hearts of the audience.

When asked about what inspired his performance, Smith said his mind focused entirely on his adopted grandfather, the late Clarance Thomas, and another close relative when he sang the song.

Having won the top prize Smith is off to getting some bills paid and plugging some cash into his business he added.

On the other hand, Mya said that after hearing the judge’s comments and the performances of her two opponents she knew hands down she hadn't a chance at the big bucks.

For James who won the prizes for the best encore performance and Best at VI performance, he indicated that he went into the competition to go hard or go home and at the end, it was for him to go home.

However, he was confident that his audience was enthralled by his performances.

She didn’t say that though.. and we all should know better that girl can Blowww and her chances were really high to win that show. She chose the right song for her final song but the wrong key.. If she lowered that key a little no ifs buts or maybes she was WINNING that show. Don’t sleep on Mya..She going to put us on the map.. Remember this was said..Vocals wise She WON..

Very Generous. More than Calypso long
More than any local band ever receive for festival performance... The money is available but I guess it depends on who is incharge and who is getting it...This a good thing. Pay local bands and artist more for festival performances..

The government can give out big checks for a competition but can’t pay me for work I did for them at the hospital 3years ago.

Ya’ll really out of order for that, Mya did not say that. Y’all twist that how y’all wanted ..anything to sell a story. She is an exceptional singer and they all did well.

I fail to understand how Yohance make it to the finals and he sound soo hoarse. Mya or Calden was to win that show but its all about "who you know" here in the bvi so I expected no less this time around.

I wasn't impress with Yohance's performance. He was lacking melody. He made sure to shed tears so that the judges can feel that pity for him. Calden was the best.

Facts, I was rooting for Calden and Mya. Those two were my favorite. After Mya faltered on her final song which I was mad about cuz I KNOW she can kill that song…she sang it multiple times before with ease..I say yeah this going to Calden for sure now.. but anyways is the BVI.
