WEST END, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has revealed that the construction of the new West End Ferry Terminal will get underway during the 2022 summer months.

He made the comments during a public meeting on the project last night, February 15, 2022.

“The funds for this project is already allocated so it is not a pie in the sky project. Construction is projected to start later in the summer around August/September I am understanding from Mr [Anthony S.] McMaster and his team but it is projected to start this year,” he said.

Project Manager Dr Karsten Gallip had previously projected the works to commence by July and end in November 2023.

A lot of work ongoing

In the meantime, Premier Fahie pointed out that there is a lot of ongoing work.

“All the times we were working towards this and having the public meetings, a lot of work have been happening behind the scenes; so don’t mistake the absence of noise for the lack of activity. So there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes with this project over the many years.”

He then explained that the project has been long in coming.

“From the time I was in class three I heard about the West End Jetty being modernised.”

The territory’s leader said while there has been some cosmetic work done over the years, it was baffling to him why for a seaport this busy that a modernised facility had not been done sooner.

“I don’t go into why the First District or why not the First District, that to me is shallow thinking, it has to be in some district, and this has to be there for years in a very instrumental, focal point, to allow this to happen with the international travel and it needs to be done, plain and simple as that,” he said.

Hon Fahie stated that the spin-off from this project will be huge, with businesses like the car rental companies, vendors, and taxi operators standing to benefit from it.

he is not saying anything anything about local contractors having a chance at the tendering for the construction of the new ferry dock, why?

Perhaps because local contractors have every right to tender. And calling out that they have a right to do so is stating what's so obvious that it would might be considered condescending? I don't think there is a person in the Virgin Islands who is of sound mind who believes a Virgin Islander cannot submit a tender to his or her own government.

Do you think that each time the UK government announces a public contract, the advertise that UK nationals can tender?

i'm still waiting to see progress from all these things that the government is ground breaking. Where is the market square? Where is the starting of the ESHS that is suppose to be completed before school reopen? Is all these things just for show? Action speaks louder than words.

Incinerator broken, school roofs falling in, no high school, roads worse than a warzone, no running water, sewage in the streets of the capital and I can go on... But we building this? To accommodate who? No tourists are coming by private boat and only a few ferries run here so why do this now? Surely there are 100 more important things to spend money on???

All lies. It will never start construction this year or any year in the future just like the Beef Island airport expansion.

From the architects description you would think it was a five star resort. Its only supposed to be a ferry dock. People wont be sitting around to watch the sunset, they will just want to get to their destination. And what ferries do they expect at night, or is that in the 50 year life span?

It’s ugly, expensive, impractical and out of place. How does it fit with the architecture of Sopers hole and the surrounding shore.? It’s not BVI , it’s more like Moscow. Do not build this monstrosity.

I would have voted for VIP again if they had completed the previous unfinished projects of the past administration. For the sake of the country. Instead them wait till last minute to start projects to make it

The design is horrible! It should have a "West Indies" look to it like Sopers Hole does. Get a local architect/engineer to design it. This is not a Spaceport.
