Charges dropped against Parris & Scatliffe
Police had charged both men, who are both residents of the USVI, after they allegedly assaulted Gregory Alvarez on August 4, 2012.
Crown Counsel, Leslie-Ann Faulkner, indicated to the court that after reviewing the file in its entirety, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had decided not to proceed with the csae any longer and filed a notice of discontinuance.
The court had heard on August 15, 2012 Parris, his wife Janice, and Scatliffe had come to the VI for the festival activities. It was alleged that about 3 A.M on August 4, 2012 Alvarez was at the Village Festival and went over to where Parris was with his wife. The Prosecution alleged that Alvarez then attempted to dance with Parris' wife, but she refused to dance with him. Parris subsequently objected to this.
Alvarez allegedly continued to pursue Parris’ wife who ignored him and stepped away. It was further alleged that he continued until their bodies made contact with each other.
Janice had related that she attempted to make him move away from her. The Prosecution indicated that Alvarez appeared unhappy that he was being ignored and then threw the drink from his glass in their direction.
The court was told that Mr. Parris, along with Scatliffe, then got into a scuffle with Alvarez.
According to court records, Alvarez received a one-inch cut above his left eye and another cut between both eyes.
He was taken to Peebles Hospital and a medical report stated that he also suffered a sprained ankle and trauma to the left side of his face.
Witnesses allegedly identified Parris and Scatliffe as the men who were seen fighting with Alvarez, but the duo denied assaulting Alvarez when questioned by Police.
Before leaving the courtroom today, Magistrate Richards asked Parris and Scatliffe whether they would be seen again at the Festival celebrations next year. They both replied in the affirmative.
