BVIFA parts company with Youth Development Coach ‘Nabu’
The decision was conveyed to Samuel, who is originally from Antigua and been with the Association for five years, via a letter last week and to the media this Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
According to the Press release, The BVIFA Executive considered that Mr Samuel’s position as the Coach/Manager of the BallStars Football club conflicted with his duties as the Association’s Youth Development Officer.
The Ballstars was originally formed to give youth footballers who had represented the Country further experience in playing against men’s teams in the National League and was part of a development plan produced by Samuel
However, the statement from the BVIFA contended that his position “required him to devote his full time and attention to association’s business, while diligently and faithfully carrying out his duties. Mr Samuel did not accede to the Association’s request, leading to a number of incidents which resulted in a breakdown of his relationship with the Association.”
BVIFA President Andy Bickerton commented, “We would like to thank "Nabu" for his contribution to Youth football in the BVI and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
Following the announcement that they had fired Vincent Samuel from his position as Youth Development Officer, the BVIFA moved swiftly to appoint Men’s National Coach Avondale Williams to take over responsibility for the Elmore Stoutt Secondary School teams. He will coach the Boys U 18 team directly; whilst Morris Mark will continue to coach the Girls U18 team and Cassandra Gregg will assume the coaching of the U 14 mixed team.
The BVIFA is also conducting interviews for the position of a Technical Director for the Association.
Meanwhile, Samuel has declined to comment on the situation and any response he may have will be decided by his lawyer, who is looking into the legality and fairness of the dismissal.
In a brief phone conversation, he did confirm though that he will still be coaching Ballstars as they prepare for the National League Final against Islanders on March 17, 2013.
The BVIFA did not obtain a work permit for Mr Samuel, but he was allowed to work in football through the auspices of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.
It is understood that a decision on whether to continue to employ Mr Samuel in the department, irrespective of any legal judgments, rests solely in the hands of Myron Walwyn as Minister responsible for sports.
