LEVERICK BAY, Virgin Gorda, VI— A boating incident at Leverick Bay in Virgin Gorda on May 25, 2025, has triggered an official safety investigation by the Marine Safety Investigation and Reporting Authority (MSIRA), in which blame or liability will not be determined.

The announcement came just one day after Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) reported on the capsizing of a vessel carrying a group of persons from the US Virgin Islands (USVI).

All 6 Injured

The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 AM, ahead of the highly anticipated Leverick Bay Poker Run. According to the initial reports, the vessel, operated by Team Pressure from St John, USVI, flipped unexpectedly.

MSIRA, by way of a public statement the following day, May 26, 2025, identified the vessel as a centre-console powerboat named Anadanto. The Authority has since also clarified that all six individuals on board the vessel were injured as a result of the capsizing.

Accident Report

Chief Marine Safety Accident Investigator, Mr Jerome Padmore, said that a full investigation is underway.

“Following established protocols, the investigation will gather and analyse information to clarify the circumstances of the accident; A safety accident report will be available to the public at an appropriate time.”

Mr Padmore did note, however, the aim of the inquiry is strictly preventative in nature, disclosing that, “the primary goal of this investigation is to enhance maritime safety and to prevent future incidents ”

As such, “The findings will not assign blame nor determine liability.”

Going too fast in unsuitable conditions full stop . No blame investigation less hassle no liability easy way out . NHI to pick up bill rather than boat insurance if it had such a policy which I very much doubt .The poker run apparently it’s not a race just dangerous if amateurs/ or drinkers/ potheads are at the helm . The organizers should demand all entries have suitable insurance, safety, communication equipment, load limit and a named Captain to hold responsibility in case of damage or injuries/ deaths as a condition of entry.

How much is this “investigation” that will result in no action or accountability going to cost the BVI Taxpayers? It’s worth noting this was a USVI boat.

investigations will commence by MSIRA in the BVI, USCG and USVI Dept. of Planning & Natural Resources. Since there were injuries to all 6 persons aboard there will likely be legal litigation in either the BVI, the USVI or both. The USCG and USVI investigations will determine the cause of the accident and assign liability to the negligent persons with the appropriate fines. The Poker Run organizers will also be investigated and liability assigned accordingly as contributory negligence.
