Bitter sweet moment: young people worked against us – Harrigan

- Says he was surprised he lost election
Elvis Harrigan said he was pleased to see the young people come out to vote but unfortunately it was against the VIP.
At Large Representative and Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn had campaigned heavily on the youths and had an active youth arm as part of his campaign committee.
At Large Representative and Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn had campaigned heavily on the youths and had an active youth arm as part of his campaign committee.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) reflect on where they went wrong in the 2011 General Elections that led to their defeat at the polls, one of the areas they may be looking to build upon is to garner the support of the younger population.

While the VIP did not directly accept any specific reasons for their downfall at the November 7, 2011 General Elections where they were defeated by the National Democratic Party 9-4, one member clearly revealed that the young people worked against them.

At a press conference held on Thursday November 10, 2011 at Brisani, Prospect Reef, former 5th District Representative Elvis Harrigan described it as “bitter sweet” as he was happy to see the young people coming out to vote but unfortunately, it wasn’t for the Virgin Islands Party.

“I always thought that the young should have gotten more involved in the elections, I was happy to see that they did, I really feel good that they did because with them being a part of the process it means that the BVI has a bright future, the bitter part of it is unfortunately they work against us,” Harrigan said.

He expressed congratulations to the young voters and said he felt good “because I feel now that this country has the future leaders involved in the process”.

The NDP campaigned heavily on the youths, with now At Large Representative and Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn had a more concentrated focus in that area throughout his campaign.

Surprise at defeat

Meanwhile, the one-term elected representative who is now replaced by Hon. Delores Christopher revealed that when he lost the election it was a surprise to him but he didn’t take long to get over it.

“… I call the radio stations, probably an hour later and expressed my congratulations to Hon. Delores Christopher. Because I believe that the territory is bigger than us and I always say on the campaign it was not a joke, it was not a game and the people spoke so it was time to quickly move on and ensure we develop this territory.”

Harrigan said being inside of Government and knowing the difficulties, he foresees the difficulties that will be coming the current government’s way and it requires everyone on board for the future of the Territory. “We need everybody on board, opposition, Government, the rest of the Territory to ensure that we develop our little beautiful nation to make sure that we are successful moving forward and we survive the difficulty especially with the economic difficulty that we have around the world.”

juggy "foresees the difficulties that will be coming the current government’s way and it requires everyone on board for the future of the Territory", simply because he is faced with the reality that NDP has access to records of wastefull spending and none of them, he, dancia, andrew, ralph, all of them had the backbone to stand up to Fraser, who was the real Premier and exterminator. We will do what ever necessary to not let the VIP rule, EVER!!!

Hey puzzle, You want to know what I have with Fraser???? For the record, I don't hate the man, I just hate his tactics. Humbleness and Fraser should not be used in the same sentence. I despise for the fact that for many years I really didn't know who the Premier was. I dispise the fact the the Premier was answering to Fraser rather than the other way around. I despise the fact that I had to witness the Premier apologizing on Fraser's behalf simply because he (Fraser) feel as though he is above the law. I dispise the fact that in the midst of a recession, many districts were left behind because Fraser had better things to do in the third (while all these things more benefited him personally than his district). I dispise that even with all the hype and confusion about BiWater, he feel he too big to come forward publicly and challenge accusations. Even when Cline and his crew was on Edmond daring him to come forward and challenge the accusation of undermining to economical structure of the BVI, again, just like the traffic light situation, he didn't feel he owes anyone any explanation. I for one don't quite understand the Biwater situation, but it would have helped to hear from the other side and be able to side with the most rational of the two, but like I said, Fraser behaved as if, he made his decision and that's that. When documents came out proving he made some premature decisions, he made no attempt to present his facts. That's the attitude of a dictator (my way or the highway). He single handedly ran this country into a ditch, disrespected the speaker of the house, disregarded the house of assembly rules all while claiming he is a humble man. Are those the attributes of a humble man??? I think not, and I am ever so happy that the NDP is in the position to unravel his mess while he sit there and watch. I don't even mind that oj ain get in. God set that up for a reason. I want Fraser to sit there and witness the NDP undo his doings. GET IT NOW??? And in the future, if you are bored with my posts, skip over them and don't read them. TRUST ME, IT'S THAT SIMPLY

This clown called billyb is a tipical example of what a hater really is. Come on here speaking about Fraser with not a shred of truth, just a blind opinion. One filled with hate I might add. Cline on Edmond show talking about Biwater and Fraser not coming back to challenge them. I bet you that Fraser had made several statements contrary to what those clowns were saying. But did you billyb read them or hear them? Conveniently no. Because you hate Fraser. About disrespecting the House, you are not in a position to make such a conclusion, because you dont know the rules of the House. What section of the Standard Orders had he Violate? I saw an inept Leader of the Opposition bungling the Rules of the House, but because of your hate for Fraser, you cant see that he was right and the Leader of the Opposition was the one wrong. Nonsense about who was the Premier, just because people like you pettitioned the Premier to fire Fraser and he didnt do it, you take this position that Fraser was the Premier. But yoy dont get to decide what happens on both sides. Your foolosh assertion that Fraser did things in his District while other Diistricts suffered, is just that. I heard Fraser said repeatedly that his policy was that each Representative had full control over what spending was don in their District. So go figure. Further, I challenge yo to post the total spendings in each District, across all five Ministries, for the past four years, and I bet you that the 3rd District does not come close to the top of the list. But your hat for Fraser would make it sound like it did. You need to meet Fraser and settle your differences with him, but the coward you are you wont. instead you will come on here and kill every story by bringing up your sad, Fraser this, Fraser that. Go get a life. Cha.

Take the loss and sit down. NDP did not use the youth they involved them, something the VIP failed to do. You all are so blind and deaf too. During the campaign Dr. Scatliffe said clearly on the podium that they did not want inexperience or youth and the entire platform applauded. How can you in one breath say you are for the youth and speak of inclusion while and in another say you don't want them? The campaign was a disjointed one and only demonstrated what everyone knew all along; that the VIP never operated as a team because they were not a team. Again yesterday Dr. Scatliffe spoke of the problem with the way in which the parliamentary process was conducted with in the party. He and others clearly were not pleased with the way they treated the at-large candidates who were all backbenchers. The very composition of the NDP showed that they care about succession planning. The VIP message to the young people was abundantly clear. They kept drilling home the idea that inexperience and youth are not what they are about. All four at-large candidates were inexperienced yet they were scoffing against it. In summary the reason for the loss was that the VIP is bankrupt of ideas and until they find people who have fresh new ideas and are not power-hungry they will get no where.

LMAO!!! boo hooo hooo! The youth are not stupid!! The VIP politicians only knew them when election time came around! Taking care of youth is NOT about giving them a few dollars every otehr week, it's about putting things in place where they could make their own money etc. They need opportunity not a hand out. So, once they put the techincal school in place, offer more trade programs at HLSCC etc. The youth will be just fine! The days of freebs are OVER, we should be working for what we want not waiting for Government to give it! So those who voted for a hand out will be disappointed and let them commit crime, when the new law for handguns is passed, giving 10yrs mandatory for hand guns, we'll see who will be so stupid! Looking at the picture I can only think on vip loyalist and crumble saying 'funny man' won't get elected! HAHA!! The funny man laugh all the way to the Complex to sit in his new office lmao!!

It is true, they did use the youths to win this Election. As evident, Myron won handsomely this way. Look at the tactic also, he remains true to his campaign, thus Minister of Education. He has ful access to swooning the young peoe for the next four years. Look they even have facebooks...a very modern method of communication, especially among the young people. Other parties need take note, if you really want to get on in government, get involved with the young people!!!!

You should be ashamed of yourself wishing bad for your country. Don't you know that wishing for the new Government's downfall is actually wishing your your own down fall and that of your children. Ddo you really want crime to be on the rise again? Do you really want to destroy what's left of your Tourist industry? Ask St. Croix. She will tell you. Repent for you know not what you say. It does not matter which party is in Government. What matters is that the country is being run with the best interest of the people in mind. What if God was to obey your every envious wish? Thank God he is not like man. Don't you prefer that everyone can eat and not just the same people all e time? Check the real estate business in The BVI. Check to see how much real estate the Government is renting. Next Che k to see who owns the real estate.you are correct. VIP supporters. Now tell me, are they thT Loyal for nothing? In aa strange way I was hoping the PPAcould ha e surprised e erybody a d capture all 4 seats. And strike a balance in our Government. Then I would see what the people would say. Come on man. Think before you talk. If you tdont care about yourself, then think of your own children when you are wishing for the country to fall under the hands of the new Government. It don't you worry your little self. They are being prayed for.

Mr. Harrigan, with all due respect to you sir, why couldn't you have said this during your campaign prior to the elections. We the people want real talk, not mud-slinging, not what someone has or has not done. We want to not only hear, but see the positive vision for our country materialize. We want our leaders to connect back with us the people, hear our concerns for our communities, our children, our economy, our country, be more visible and reachable in the communities they were elected to represent, not only a few months or a few weeks or a few days before the election process is finalized!!!!! We don't need you to tell us a few months before we vote what you have done for our communities and our country. If you have done what you say you've done, it would already be visible to us!!! We don't want you just before election finalizing works that you had 4 years to complete, or SIGNING CONTRACTS DAYS OR WEEKS BEFORE THE ELECTION FOR WORK THAT YOU HAD 4 YEARS TO COMPLETE! THOSE CONTRACT SIGNINGS JUST WEEKS OR DAYS BEFORE AN ELECTION SHOULD ALSO BE ILLEGAL!!! If a government body has been dissolved, is in the process of being DISSOLVED, or is in transition, NO LEGAL DOCUMENTS SHOULD BE SIGNED UNTIL THE LEGAL PROCESS OF ELECTION HAS BEEN COMPLETED!!! I don't care how long the country has been ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS OR THIS PRACTICE EITHER! These types of POLICIES, FORCES THE NEW GOVERNMENT TO HONOR THOSE CONTRACTS WHETHER THEY ARE GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY OR NOT!!! We want the country to MOVE FORWARD, not steadily BACKWARDS! With all due respect Mr. Harrigan, you stated, "...unfortunately they worked against us". Why is that unfortunate? The young people did not necessarily work against YOU or the VIP. The young people worked against LONG STANDING UNFAIR PRACTICES AND POLICIES THAT ARE DEVASTATING OUR COUNTRY. THEY CAMPAIGNED AGAINST THE UNFAIR PRACTICES AND PREJUDICES OF OUR YOUTHS AND THE DISADVANTAGED IN OUR COMMUNITIES. THESE ARE THE PRACTICES, POLICIES AND PREJUDICES THAT WERE UPHELD, "UNFORTUNATELY" BY THE VIP! Now that's what's "unfortunate", not how they campaigned or voted. They voted to SEND NOT ONLY THE VIP, but the NDP, and whoever decides to DISRESPECT the OFFICE of LEADERSHIP in OUR COUNTRY, a very STRONG MESSAGE..."WE WILL NO LONGER SIT/STAND IDLY BY AND WATCH YOU TOTALLY DESTROY US, OUR COUNTRY, AND OUR FUTURE!!!" Now that is the message the youths and not only the youths, but our entire country sent this ELECTION! The people OF OUR country do care who we put into office, AND THEY MUST HAVE POSITIVE VISION, POSITIVE GOALS AND OUR COUNTRY AT HEART!!!! You stated that you foresee "the difficulties that will be coming the current government's way...it requires everyone on board for the future of the Territory. We need everybody on board, opposition, Government, the rest of the Territory to ensure that we do develop our little beautiful nation to make sure that we are successful in moving forward......" That is a beautiful statement, an honest statement, you should have stated that in your re-election speech, and throughout the last four years of your service. What you stated is the truth about us all "needing each other", something "WE THE PEOPLE" realized that the VIP forgot when they failed to understand who "we the people" really are! WE are not just the RICH, we are also the poor, the disadvantaged, students, youths, the elderly and middle-aged, educators/teachers, nurses, the small little local contractor as well as the big ones, we are the law-abiding, and we are also the ones that are NOT law-abiding. We are a people of many differences. Throughout the world, nation-wide, if you watch the news, you will realize that YOUTHS EVERY WHERE ARE STANDING UP AGAINST THE INJUSTICES IN THEIR COUNTRIES AND NATIONS, AGAINST INEFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP, AGAINST DICTATORS, AGAINST CORRUPTION. They are all doing it with...THEIR VOICES AND THEIR VOTES. The economic difficulty you voiced that we are experiencing locally, nationally, globally, originated from something very simple actually. IT IS CALLED GREED!!! The GREED of men (and that's not related to gender but humanity), who wants/wanted it ALL FOR THEMSELVES!!! Men who forgot what it means to be HUMAN AFTER THEY FOUND THEMSELVES IN POWER TOO LONG!!!!!! The election is over, but the real work is only just beginning. The people, (THE YOUTHS) really don't care right now one way or another why you THINK THE VIP LOST! All we care about (including the YOUTHS), is that YOU UNDERSTAND why you (VIP) lost! The new government is already sworn in, and WE THE PEOPLE ARE STILL WATCHING! We really don't care what THE PARTY CALLS ITSELF, FOR WHEN IT ALL BOILS DOWN, WHETHER VIP, NDP, OR PPD, OR WHATEVER THEY CALL THEMSELVES, THEY ARE STILL "THE GOVERNMENT" THAT WE THE PEOPLE ELECTED TO DO A SPECIFIC JOB WITHIN OUR COUNTRY. THAT JOB IS TO RESPECT THEMSELVES, THE PEOPLE, OUR NATION/COUNTRY, OUR ECONOMY, AND TO WORK HONESTLY WITH DIGNITY AND PRIDE (not ARROGANCE and ENTITLEMENT), IN MOVING OUR COUNTRY FORWARD NOT BACKWARDS, ALL THE WHILE STAYING CONNECTED TO THE PEOPLE YOU SWORE TO REPRESENT AS A COMMUNITY AND A COUNTRY, AND NOT JUST INDIVIDUALLY!!!!! If you and others or any ELECTED PARTY CANNOT ACCOMPLISH THIS...THEN YOU SHOULD NOT SEEK THE OFFICE OF A LEADER, MINISTER, OR DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE!!!!!! Lastly, Mr. Harrigan sir, The YOUNG PEOPLE DID NOT WORK AGAINST YOU, NO ONE IS THAT IMPORTANT, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE. INSTEAD, THE YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WORKED AGAINST THE SYSTEM OF INEFFECTIVE GOVERNING/GOVERNMENT, MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP!!!!

I agree with everything that you have written. What we truly need now is for everyone to pull together to get this country back on track and stop blame game. We must understand that when God is ready to tear down he is no respecter of persons. Our prayer should be that God will be in control and that our new Government would serve us with integrity. As a country we need to continuously fall on our knees because it is prayers that changes thing. The Government is formed by human beings and unless they allow God to direct them they will find themselves going in the wrong direction. We must seek direction from our Creator as he knows all things. Without him we are nothing. A lot of time we credit ourselves for our accomplishments but how many of us say that through God I was able to do this or that? “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord and He will exalt you”……………James 4 vs 10

I don't know why Mr. Harrigan was surprised with his loss at the polls. Mrs. Christopher said it best, the people compared the records of the two and made a choice and it was clear. Mr. Harrigan is a nice guy but he too got caught in the mix and became a victim of his own circumstance. Many said he was too busy scolding people for not addressing him as Honourable. From the moment he was first elected he changed his focus and like many of his colleagues allowed the position to get to his head. Humility is a virtue and it does not keep company with conceit or arrogance. In fact, they are mortal enemies. If Mr. Harrigan is honest with himself he would recognize the fact that he did precious little for the 5th District. He got elected, wasted three and a half years and at the eleventh hour was trying to make an impression. The margin would have been even wider but people like him as an individual but resented his many unfulfilled promises, lies and run-arounds. Lesson learned is that last minute half-baked projects and hand outs don't get you re-elected. Districts need people that truly care for them and their conditions. Mr. Harrigan said at the press conference yesterday that the young people voted against him and the VIP. Nothing could be further from the truth. The young people voted for the party that demonstrated they cared for and about them. When you look back at the message of the VIP there was nothing of substance to grab the attention of the young people. I will take it one step further. Many of the young people felt insulted by being offered hand outs (although many took them) since they realized that this is not the way to build their future. One last note. If the VIP is to move on and remain relevant there are a few things they must do. 1. They must retire Mr. O'Neal and choose a new leader with fresh ideas and the ability to deal with the emerging problems and issues. 2. Allow Fraser or Fahie to officiate as Opposition Leader and keep Mr. O'Neal in an advisory capacity (if he so desires). 3. They must infuse new blood into the party and allow for dissenting views (all good teams have that in common). 4. Demonstrate a true love and care for the people and not themselves and their cronies. They are the ones that kept saying "action speaks louder than words" yet their actions never saw the light of day. In short, the VIP needs a total overhaul. This is their best chance at reformation and if they squander it they are done. Stop preaching about the 40 year legacy of the party and show how the party is still relevant today. The legacy of the party is merely a history lesson and is worth nothing if current members do nothing to continue that legacy. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Fraser is your nightmare, so no surprise there. But this is not a decision for the NDP, it is a VIP decision. So mind your own business. It is amaizing how you always have nasty things to say about Fraser, whether you post as billyb, T2DB, or real Talk, and now expect to give an opinion on whether Fraser is the likely candidate for Leader of the Opposition. That is like Lucifer giving an opinion on wheather Jesus should be Christ.

You sound so foolish, that's how you think of the young people? What about you, what the VIP lied and told you for you to have such a confidence in them that you feel they are the only ones who can get things done, tell me? And after 40 yrs of being in power they don't have much to show for it other than cosmetic politics, not because we the youths don't see things you do or like you do don't mean that we can be fooled by anyone like you! VIP does not have any vision ABSOLUTELY NONE, they just want to pay their way in power so they can have access to money and have ppl like puppets until election time come around and they take YOU the people for fools because all they have to do is give you some simple excuse for why they didn't do this or that KNOWING that you WILL NOT question and research for the truth. All they have to do to get your vote is give you money or build a back wall, or bring you a turkey or ham for xmas and you give them your X and EXPECT THEM TO DO BETTER FOR THE NEXT 4 YRS, RUBBISHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, and you saying the NDP used us and fooled us. We are the ones who are working and paying social security so when your time comes to retire if you haven't done that already can go and collect your check, but if we like you sit by and accept handouts then tell me what will you get when you retire? If you retire, some of you reach retirement age and don't want to go home and give someone else a try, well i praise God that those days are done the longest rope has an end, GET OVER IT! Juggy you are unbelievable. I was an undecided voter the night of your launch. I was so dissapointed in your behavior on that podium. I came to hear your plans for our district about how you plan to include us in your vision for the district. Yet what i was subjected to was your childish "rateraring" and carrying on."She out of all order, ....out of place"......that was not very christian like to me......and then the following night i went to Mrs. Christopher's, she addressed the issues and humbly apologized to us about her actions and she left it there. No shouting, yelling and screaming , no contradicting words about who live where. Contradicting your own collegues within your party who some are as well guilty of not living where they represent. Very dissapointing behavior that night. She got her msg across to us, obviously, loud and clear. Grow up and examine yourself before you look at anyone else especially the church. And be mindful of what you say publicly because someone is always listening to make informed decisions. Suprised,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,??????????I can't imagine how.
