Bishop Cline slams Gov Rankin for suggesting majority in VI open to direct rule

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Outspoken clergyman Mr John I. Cline has slammed the Virgin Islands' Governor, H.E. John J. Rankin, CMG for suggesting that the people of the Virgin Islands (VI) are willing to accept direct rule.

Bishop Cline during a June 2, 2022, social media video made reference to a news article where it was reported that the governor reportedly said that the 'small number' of people who turned out to the two demonstrations against direct rule, is not a representation of the wider community.

“Well, I don't know where the governor lives and where he's getting his information because clearly the governor is disconnected from this community if he thinks that the turnout at the demonstration was an indication that somehow the BVI is ready and willing to accept direct rule.”

Bishop Cline said the Governor has taken a very ill-informed position, "if that's what the governor is suggesting, and I had to come on here and say to the people of the Virgin Islands, 'What happens when you don't stand up? What happens when you don't show up? What happens when you don't speak up?...you give someone else the right to speak for you.”

The popular clergyman added that the Governor is trying to send out a narrative to the UK that they have the backing of the people of these Virgin Islands to impose direct rule.

UK trying to cause division in VI - Bishop Cline

He said the narrative is to cause division among the people. “Divide and conquer is the oldest strategy in the book, and to put us against each other while we're fighting.”

“I had to remind the governor that you are not just the governor representing the UK, you are the governor of the Virgin Islands and the interests of these people should be at heart, but for him to indicate that the small amount at the demonstrations is that it is not a representation of the wider BVI community when it comes to direct rule, that’s delusional and I will say it again.”

Bishop Cline added that in meetings with UK Minister Amanda A. Milling and the BVI Christian Council, youths groups and a cross-section of the community, persons indicated that direct rule is not an option.

“All of us have said on many occasions to the governor, to our elected officials, there are some recommendations coming out of the CoI, out of the 45 that we believe has merit and if implemented and when implemented, will strengthen good governance, will provide accountability and transparency and we are willing to work towards that,” he added.

Mr Cline indicated; however, that the accepted position is that direct rule and a suspension of the constitutions will not be an option moving forward.

There have been reports; however, that the proposal sent to the United Kingdom by the Unity Government essentially yields to direct rule without the suspension of the VI constitution, since the Governor will be the all-powerful person.

We understand that it's in these few elite best interest to keep things the way it is, they don't care about the people it's all about them..I Agree with the Wise Governor if you are a street person the same sentiment is what the street advocating.."A Britain short term Rule to fix, cleanup and put things in order". This hoax of direct rule is akin to Russia going in to "Liberate" Ukrainians. We see through this veil and will not stand for it. If the BVI failed with good governance, then the UK failed because the Governor had a front row seat to the mess and every contract signing at the closed door, Cabinet sittings. Don't conveniently leave yourself and your office out of the blame now. Work with the people to implement the COI recommendations. But suspension of the constitution or direct UK rule in any form will not be accepted.

If the truth be told, the majority of persons in the BVI are not from the BVI. It is evident their dislike for the Bvi but at the same time they want what is correct for the way things should be done. They really do not have any skin in the game. We bvislanders also want good governance even if the ok helps. We also do not want direct rule. We bvislanders are very serious about both issues. But it is also evident that there is an agenda at play here and it is quite obvious. Time will tell! ????????

I cannot understand the sentiments expressed by His Excellency the governor that the majority of the people want Direct Rule in the Territory. I want to state categorify that I am opposed to the direct rule by the British government. I would like the governor to express what has Britain contributed to this Territory that makes the people consider them as their savior. They have exploited many countries around the world in the name of Developer and Protectorate of the countries.

These are modern days and we will not surrender our Territorial integrity to the British who are masquerading as savior. I am totally offended with such statements by the governor. The British needs to clean their houses before venturing into other countries as protector of Democracy. Total Nonsense.

The BVI should not be discussing anything with Britain with the verb RULE in the narrative. The definition speaks loudly of subjugation of a people and Britain has had a long cruel and devastating history of evil in its wake.

The expatriates are gloating.... they are blogging left right and center under anonymous names. You would be surprised who they are.... we the people need to be together. You think our expatriates friends are happy every time they come to our huge luxurious homes, or see the standard of living we enjoy? The hurtful thing is that many of us work hard and honestly to get what we have. Now we are all being looked at as crooks. History repeating itself, they went to Africa, India and all over the world and took over treating natives as animals. Look what we come to BVI, they laughing g and greasing their palms. Just remember I said this, those of you who eager to see UK rule be careful what you ask for, , you will become second hand citizens in your own land. They will ease in little by little saying its just for 2 years or so then 10 years later our children will be shaking their heads with disgust at us. Now is the time for us to unite not divide, don't be fooled by these expatriates, none of them and I repeat none of them have us in the same league as their own, history will repeat itself. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone what Andrew and his croonies have done, if proven guilty they need to throw the book at them, my concern is the opportunity that now exists for the UK, being urged by the expatriates and their politicians that we cannot govern ourselves. Remember that is what the English said about South Africa that the blacks cannot lead themselves.

What is the UK going to take from us? There is nothing to take!

Our only true resource is our children and we have shown our children over and over again that we just don't care. Look at the state of our schools... (unless we can make money off them...by arming them).

Fish? Don't make me laugh. You can see the gigantic Japanese trawlers to the North every winter.

Natural beauty? These are desert islands- Just look around. If we wanted to preserve, there would be solar RO reservoirs at the top of every bay.

What do they want from a territory with a government that spends a THIRD OF A BILLION DOLLARS every year for almost 10 years and has NO INFRASTRUCTURE?

Do we pay taxes to the UK? And yet, every time there's a disaster they send ships and support and money. When they offer more money, we say no because they demand (Lord have Mercy!) accountability.
Get real. They want us out: O-U-T. What the UK wants is the world to see 'they tried' before they jettison our butts.
