ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI and the USVI both lost their semi finals in the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Men’s Championships and will now face a battle for 3rd and 4th place today, Saturday July 5, 2014, as well as qualification for the 2014 Centro Baskets.

The Bahamas defeated the Host Nation, 84 – 65, to claim a place in the Final, where they will meet Cuba overcoming a tenacious BVI team that grabbed an early lead at 12 – 6. However the Bahamas quickly reacted with a 3 – 7 run to decrease the BVI’s advantage to 2, 13 -15. They then tied the score at 20, at the end of the first quarter.

Bahamas defense bullied under their own basket and gained control of the ball to mount plenty of offense and led by ten at the half way point, 28 – 38.

During the first half, Keith “88” Malone’s men relied on three point efforts, but found it hard to get Halstead “JR” Chiverton the room he needed and in total scored just 3 of 13 shots from long distance; meanwhile the Bahamas used their height advantage in the paint to score 22 points.

The top scorer of the first half was Rashid Cann of the BVI with 9 points.

The advantage of the Bahamas continued to the increase through the start of the third quarter, with the BVI struggling to find any offensive rhythm and the quarter ended Bahamas 59 - BVI 47.

Two straight three-pointers and two-free-throws by the BVI opened the action of the fourth quarter to give a glimmer of hope to the large crowd, but the Bahamas responded with a run of 7-0, to take back a 12 point lead, 68 – 56.

As the clock ran down and despite a spirited effort from the BVI, the Bahamas maintained the comfortable lead and took the win, 84 – 64.

They automatically qualified for the Finals of the 2014 CBC Championship and to the 2014 Centrobasket Championship.

The top scorer for the Bahamas was Marvin Gray with 17 points; Magnum Rolles added 13 points with 9 rebounds, Alonzo Hinds 13 and Kadeem Coleby 15.

For the BVI Steve E. Parillon scored 17, Norville Carey 13, Kennedy H. Bass 12 and Rasheed Cann 11 with 8 rebounds.

In the other Semi Final, Cuba withstood the pressure imposed by the US Virgin Islands, to take the victory, 62 – 60, and qualify for the Finals of the CBC Championship and to the Centro basket Championship, to be played from August 1st to the 7th in Nayarit, Mexico.

Cuba found its offensive rhythm first, starting the game with an 8 -2 lead on the scoreboard and at the end of the first quarter, the Cuban team had a 12 point lead, 20 – 8.

Fast possessions were the rule of the game; speed in transitions was a key to be able to score. The coaches had to resort to the rotation of the players, as fatigue was playing a vital role in the game. The team led by Milton Barnes found its rhythm and was able to decrease the Cuban lead to two points, 25 -23, with 3:00 to play of the first half. A basket from mid-range by Devon Peltier and two free-throws by Aaron Brown gave the US Virgin Islands team a two point lead, 27 - 25. Cuba with 9 straight points, took a 7 point lead, 34 – 27, at the end of the first half.

The Cubans were able to maintain their lead on the scoreboard throughout the entire first half of the quarter, but the second half of the quarter was another story, as the USVI went on a streak that decreased  the opponent’s advantage to 4 points at the end of the third quarter, Cuba 48 – US Virgin Islands 44.

Cuba was the first to score in the last quarter, from the hands of Yoan Luis. Two straight triples from the Islands team decreased the Cuban advantage to 5, 57 – 52. Justiz dunked after an assist by Granda to take the lead back to 7. The US Virgin Islands team responded with a 6 – 0 run, to be one point away from the opponent. Granda was fouled and sent to the free-throw line with 1.5 seconds to play, he made the first and missed the second on purpose, but the USVI did not score on the last shot, and the Victory was Cuba’s.

The Final is the last game tonight and follows a mouthwatering replay of the BVI v the USVI to decide 3rd and 4th spot as well as who gets to go to the Centro Baskets and of course there’s a little matter of local rivalry and a chance to for the BVI to redeem themselves after losing to their arch rivals in the group stages.

I suppose that the team was selected based on who showed interest. So if the guys from east wanted to play all they had to do was show up

So how do you guys know that the East guys weren't approached but didn't want to play? Did they show interest and were turned away, or did they not show interest? I think we need to know the answers to those questions before talking along those lines. It's just like asking why a BVIslander didn't get a certain job, when no BVIslander applied. WTF? They can't be picked for the team if they're not interested in playing. If I remember the last CBC Tourney it was the same thing so what is is? FIBA/CBC is not a playtoy organization and I'm sure they involve drug testing and other things in order to qualify, you should see where I"m going with this.

I shouted to one of the coaches to take a player out the game. His reply to me was "he is not listening so all you can do is sit back and watched a game like me."

so after that point I set and watched the coaches trying to advise the head coach to certain things and he was right the head coach was not listening to his assistants at all. I was informed later that the only one that the head coach listens to is his best friend who was the guy sitting right next to him on the bench.

I watched as one of the coaches got off the bench got in the coach's face and told them to do something in the head coach just ignore him. So what do you need assistant coaches for if you're not even gonna listen to them.

I was informedby one of the coaches the coaching staff is a two man show the rest is just smoke and mirrors he's very embarrassed at the level of coaching.

Why is everyone surprised? This is by far the worst Bvi team I have seen in years. I think a lot of the player are overrated. They got this far by pure luck
