ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Crime-weary business owners in the Virgin Islands are calling again for permission to carry firearms to protect their businesses against robberies and other offences, as overall robberies with guns have increased in the past two years.

Three business owners speaking to our newsroom on condition of anonymity noted that “it’s hard for business owners to obtain firearm licenses in the Territory and this is wrong”.

The correlation between crime rates and the demand for firearms among business owners is a complex and multifaceted issue. While some studies suggest that higher rates of gun ownership may lead to increased incidents of gun-related crimes, others argue that access to firearms allows for self-defence and acts as a deterrent against crime.

We need to carry firearms

One local bar owner said, “If these bad boys know we have guns in our bars, they will not mess with us. I have applied over three years now, and I continue to get the runaround.”

It is unclear what the procedure is to obtain a firearm and how long it takes. Some two years ago, the outspoken pastor of the New Life Baptist Church, Bishop John I. Cline, was the second clergyman to call for business owners to be allowed to carry arms as a means of protecting themselves from criminal elements.

“How can you have young men, they don’t have any businesses, they don’t have anything, they tilt towards crime, they are armed, but responsible business people who work hard… and you can’t trust them to give them a licensed firearm?” Bishop Cline said on the Tuesday, April 20, 2021, edition of the My BVI radio show.

Bishop Cline’s call came after similar calls were made by ‘Honestly Speaking’ host Claude O. Skelton-Cline, who called for laws to allow business owners to carry firearms to be able to protect themselves.

In the Virgin Islands (VI), businesses are generally not allowed to have firearms on their premises, even though they are considered private property, and the right to control one’s property is a fundamental aspect of VI law.

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E Vanterpool was asked about her take on the matter but said she was in a meeting and could not respond at the time.

Gun crime against businesses

There have been several armed robberies at local businesses or involving business owners over the years.

In April 2021, Catherine Pickering was shot in the head at a residence in Paraquita Bay during an armed robbery. She was the mother of a businesswoman who had returned to the residence with her earnings for the day when the robbery occurred. She succumbed to her injuries on April 19, 2021.

Bath and Turtle Restaurant on Virgin Gorda was robbed on the evening of June 8, 2024.

Just this past weekend, during the early hours of Saturday, October 4, 2025, one man was shot during an armed robbery at a popular bar in Road Town.

Listen up, everyone, we need to get a grip in this place! The love of money will be your downfall. There’s no need for firearms! The police should really do their jobs better! I don’t want any irresponsible parents allowing their kids to find their weapons and go after bullies or anyone else at school.

You have children raising children here, and you want one of them to own a gun??? The same ones you see zooming around on motorcycles with toddlers on their bike, and without helmets at that? 'Another dangerous issue the police aren’t solving!'

This the same child caring, business owners that are always pleading for leniency in court for their drug cases.

You may be legalising guns for the very people who are using them at the moment.

Last thing we need is legal, gun toting, scooter riding, links wearing business people with children doing wheelies around the territory shooting rounds into the air.

Bad enough that they are allowed to do it illegally without enforcement.

    I wouldn't legalise it.

Study shows most fire arm license approval for business people are used to kill their partners not the criminala. Once a criminal know your arm he is not taking no chance, he taking you out.. .

People are scared to take responsibility for their health. The doctor has to do it. The police have to do it. There have been too many murders and robberies the criminals have guns and know every one else is prey. They can follow anyone home. Steal any car. No fire arm control excuse about porous borders. As a bystander over the years there is too much second trauma and it is still happening. No excuse for the process to be unclear when all the criminals have access to guns. Train license holders but allow it.

Once a criminal know you are armed , he is not coming in there to rob because at the end of the day they are a bunch of cowards

when I take a look at the gun incidents in the bvi i hardly see or hear business owners getting robbed. it is ordinary people that coming working for the minimum wage going to the atm machines. it's people who hanging out having a good time.its the guys who deals in illegal activities. it's the guys that wear the jewelry. not the business owners .so why do the business owners need guns??. are they going to protect the ordinary citizens??we almost know all the legitimate business owners in the territory. when last one get robbed??. so every tom and Jerry that open a bar or a candy store that we called business owner should they have a licensed firearm?? or is the guy who owns businesses in fish bay or those that owns businesses in port purcell?? I never heard these people get robbed. it appears to me that the man of the cloth who never get robbed neither his business buddies are looking to acquire firearms to protect who???

Ok lets put this idea out there. A business owner shoots a person robbing their business and kills them. Lets say the person does not have a fire arm and is shot, or the person is shot in the back running away as examples.
Now we have a dead robber and a business owner who is responsible for the death. Im sure that the familys of the deceased will not be happy and have retribution against the owner of the business.
I think if someone is robbing you with a gun just give them what they want as its not worth dying over money or things. Let the police do their work after and this will illiminate the risk of death of all involved. Guns should not be in the hands of anyone. Look at the mess America is in. School shooting in the USA are a daily thing. Happened once in the Dunblane UK and hand guns were outlawed overnight.

Having a firearm is the best thing they could do just for responsible, and properly vet owners, Not all businesses but the ones that handles money late night, Remember a legal fireman only during business hours, would be registered in the system and any shot release from that particular firearm would be trace back!! It’s not an advantage to own a legal firearm!! If you shoot someone that’s not committing a crime in your business you are still going to jail!! Just not getting charge for the weapon!!! Regarles, not giving business owners the opportunity is giving the criminals!! A better opportunity!!
And that why you have psychologist exam, to see how what kind of temperament you have! Because obviously someone with anger issues shouldn’t have a firearm

Registered firearms produce more responsible ownership because the owner has to account for the guns use. Also not everyone would qualify for the firearm. Certain businesses with histories of criminal records attached to their operations or employees wouldn't qualify. You cannot manage firearms in your country if all the firearms are illegal. That creates an unmanageable problem where only criminals have firearms and not law abiding citizens. Guns do not have intention they have purpose. A gun in a safe doesn't shoot anyone. A responsible gun owner would have a gun and you wouldn't even know until you find out. We need a sensible discussion and not some tv news freaks overreacting to the word 'Gun'.
