BEEF ISLAND, VI– Officials of the BVI Airports Authority {BVIAA) have announced that just two weeks into its new direct service between Miami and the Virgin Islands (VI), American Airlines (AA) has announced that it will be doubling the number of flights to the Territory for the winter season, which starts in December.

The announcement was made in a release published on AA’s website earlier today, June 14, 2023.

AA in the press release said commencing December 2023, the airline will increase flights on the new direct route from once daily to twice daily.

It added that travelers looking to escape the cold this next winter will have more choices in the Caribbean and Latin America.

“With two new routes and expanded frequencies on 21 routes, American will solidify its position as the leading carrier flying nonstop between the United States and Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America.”

Move shows confidence VI - BVIAA's Kurt A.G. Menal

According to the Managing Director of the BVIAA, Mr Kurt A.G. Menal said the development demonstrates a high level of confidence in the VI as a top tourism destination that is also in high demand.

“It also demonstrates confidence in the capabilities of the BVIAA to handle the increased number of flights and greater passenger movements, and to provide quality service to travelers,” he added.

AA launched its historical daily direct flight service between the VI and Miami on June 1, 2023, which resulted in high demands, leading the airline to move to schedule five additional flights for the month of June even before its inaugural flight took place.

Passenger movements to increase to over 22K

“Based on the airline’s initial schedule, AA’s direct service was projected to increase passenger movements at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (TBLIA) in 2023 by over 19,000 passengers. However, the latest announcement would see AA increase passenger movements by over 22,000 passengers,” BVIAA said in a release.

The Airport Authority said that based on the recovery of the global tourism and travel industry and the introduction of new services such as the AA direct flight to Miami, the BVIAA had initially projected an increase in passenger movements by over 40 percent for this year over 2022 figures.

The increase in AA’s scheduled flights will have a further positive impact on passenger movements at TBLIA,” the release added.

Are we the “BVI” or the B was added to differentiate from the USVI?
      Points to consider
      * the passport for the territory bares the words on its cover The Virgin Islands. Inside further states The Governor of the Virgin Islands requests and requires in the Name of His Majesty
      * The police force name is the Royal Virgin Islands police force

The legal name of the Territory is The Virgin Islands. The term BVI or British Virgin Islands is a Tourism marketing gimmick. https://bvi.gov.vg/sites/default/files/constitution.pdf

I guarantee if we were the "US" Virgin Islands none of you would have cared to have it removed. So we are the "Virgin Islands" who are you competing with?

We are not. Our true name is "The Virgin Islands" marketing has allowed us to be marketed as something we are not. It is only to distinguish us from the USVI which is actually the United States Virgin Islands. Check your Virgin Islands passport if you have one.

If you all like to argue so much just to ask. Who called us these Islands "Virgin Islands?" What were these Islands called before our Colonizers brought us here? When we answer these questions. Then we will know who we are.

Great news! Just work on now getting those prices under $1k. It’s a bit outrageous people might just opt for going through STT instead.

Two Comments: 1/ The BVI will never win a war with the USVI with naming. 2/ Isn't this proof that we do NOT need a longer runway?

The pricing is for those who can afford.
Not for those with the :handout" mentality. Quality is not cheap.

What exactly is quality about them using their smaller outdated American eagle planes for this route? Even a round trip ticket to Dubai on Emirates, which is REAL quality, cost less than coming here. Be serious.

What do the naysayers have to say now? The ones who said no airlines would be interested in flying direct to the BVI?? (The Virgin Islands). They also said extending the runway would be a waste of time because everyone would still fly through the USVI. Where are they now? I really wonder. They have vanished.

All this AA/mia hype is doing is increasing demand, thus increasing prices. Based on the prices ive seen, ill be sticking with a ferry over to STT. Perhaps less hastle traveling seeing that most of the bvi crowd will stay over here for the direct flights
