ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Construction of the additional piece of runway at Terrance B. Lettsome Airport on Beef Island is planned for 2026, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley has said.

In a statement on October 30, 2025, Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the Virgin Islands (VI) will seek to extend the airport runway at Terrance B. Lettsome Airport on Beef Islands by 7000 feet, and this has been endorsed by Cabinet.

During his Budget Address at the Twelfth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Premier Wheatley said his government is advancing the territory’s transportation infrastructure for sustainable growth.

“The Cabinet, guided by the business case submitted by KPMG, has approved the expansion of Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, selecting a 7,000-foot runway extension to support larger aircraft and direct flights from major regions.

“This project will improve travel options, increase tourism and investment, create jobs, and is planned to begin construction in 2026 after identifying qualified partners through an Expression of Interest process,” Premier Wheatley said.

‘Master Plan’

The Premier also noted that a “Master Plan” for airport development will be submitted for approval, and an Environmental Impact Assessment is planned by the end of 2025.

Request for Proposals (RFP) for the runway extension project is expected to be issued in the first quarter of 2026.

Will the extension be into EE Bay or Trellis Bay, or both?

A crucial benefit that is often dismissed in airlift access is the provision for non-emergency medical services in the United States. For individuals who require access to cities like Miami—yet cannot withstand the rigors of a grueling 15-hour journey—this enhanced accessibility would undoubtedly lighten their burden. Furthermore, the prospect of expediting travel to the mainland may entice more retirees from the United States to settle in the BVI, a consideration that holds substantial weight for older adults. The significance of this factor cannot be overstated; for retirees, proximity to quality healthcare and the ability to reach it swiftly can dramatically influence their living choices. Consider the example of Costa Rica, where a vibrant expatriate community thrives. Many are drawn not just by the country's high-ranking medical services but also by the comforting assurance that they can return to the U.S. mainland in approximately three hours. This points to a broader truth: that for many, the balance between quality of life and access to essential services is of paramount importance, shaping where they choose to reside in their later years. To understand the economic impact that retirees can have, one need only research the contributions they make to Florida's economy during the winter months.

From you comment I am guessing that Florida is the only State that has Hospitals , so no John Hopkins or other world class hospitals ?? And since you are against extending the runway I am guessing we shoud leave it up to weather to determine if we can travel or not since this current runway barely has sufficient ASDA for the current jets.

The question is how much is cost? What did the business case say? Are we going to get another done deal without consideration ? How does the government intend to pay back to loan ? No increments ? No water ? No roads? Where will the revenue comfrom to pay for this ? cabinet will not cut their salaries :o

The VI people have not seen the reports or approved this project.
We live in under an authoritarian DICTATORSHIP. Colonialism is back. We are just low wage workers. They are no limits Elites.
The "Not a done Deal" airport was always that.

Make the March on Monday against this. This will be the biggest crime against the VI people.
VI people will be bound by the chains of debt from this for a century whilst a few get rich quick.
There is a reason this is all being done behind closed doors locked in a SECRET cabinet.

So we must march against the airport runway something that is going to benefit the Territory? I don’t think you have much common sense.

I can tell you BVI Terminal looks internation from the Air from arriving,, but from inside it looks very small..it need more space inside, Needs a Nursing and police post with staff not there and shut down...The Cruise Pier need extending also, so it can accommodate bigger ships...We have to develop our tourism product for maximum benefits from both Air and Sea..

That is your opinion and why not? Please explain. Don’t you think it is time for the airport to be modernized? I am all for expanding the run way where we can accommodate larger aircraft’s and direct flights to Europe, Canada and Other parts of the US. I am tired of having to go to the USVI or Antigua or Barbados to catch a bigger plane. LIKE I STATED, I AM IN FAVOR OF THE RUNWAY EXPANSION

Even with a longer runway, you make still have to fly to those other airports to catch bigger planes..

What about Sea Cow's Bay? Don't forget to fix that too. And while you're at it there are a few major pothole going West that needs to be filled. They could cause major damage to vehicles or a major accident.

Some decades ago, air access to the BVi was via a small airstrip on Beef Island which, before the construction of the bridge, was accessed by crossing the stream on a small manually propelled barge. Even in those days, there were some who felt that this was positively quaint and no need for further development of air access. Years later, accepting that the airstrip needed to be expanded, the British Royal Engineers were brought in to do the job. Since American Airlines added direct Miami flights a couple years ago to Anguilla, Dominica and BVI, those other countries have now proceeded with their plans for airport expansion while the BVi lags behind. While concerns about transparency and financial integrity are legitimate concerns, the runway expansion is a 21st century necessity. Perhaps government should request the British Royal Engineers to do the job once again; one suspects it would cost less and avoid any bobol.

This is long overdue and very good. Only question is how much will it cost and how long will we be paying for it? If its a PPP how much will our taxes, fees, and ticket prices go up.

The British Virgin Islands have a total land area of less than 60 square miles, including all the cays, and rocks, and a resident population of less than 40,000. The two together relate to half the size of a small town in the UK or US.

Residents of small towns elsewhere, have to spend hours travelling to a larger metropolis to catch a flight.

One might ask, how many visitors do the residents of these islands need to economically survive, and is it worth further destroying the environment that both visitors and residents were attracted to in the first place?

In reference to the topic issue plan for the extention of Terence B. Airport, 2026, I have been reminded of infants children stuffing food into the mouth, having not the ability to chewed it properly, because other infants were also ate from the plate in a greedy haste

The truth is at the time or juncture of our development of, of course the B.V.I. a number of planned projects are on our political cabinet table for consideration. Such as the rebuilding of dismantled Althier Scattliff's Primary School, the rebuilding of the torned down old Culture site across or parallel from the dismantled dismantled Althier Scattliffe's, the West End Ferry Dock not-yet-started projects, and a number of others planned projects not yet funded.
The simple to understand truth is the at this time, all of these projects are needful, but we lact the money to do all of them in the short term.
Our 2026 budjet $550M, though our largest estimated ever is inefficiently to small to properly funded, planned, begin, muchless to finish them all in the short term. Posible a number of them will not be started, but if they all will, and be completed, not disregarding our current water shortages due to leakage, about 80% I heard, our traffic roads efficiency, our run-dowin infrastructure, and counting. If we are too achieved all of these mentioned projects, and bring under control the current hike of violent gun crimes, and elegal drugs violations, we would need much more than a budjet estimate. We will need at least, $1, 000,000,000 plus, bearing in mind that due to poor accountable of budgetary cash management, $50M of the $550M of the 2026 budjet can disappear into thin air???

I put it to you that we do do need to extend the Terence B. Airport in the future, but we don't have the money (financial ability to start, muchless start and finished those that we urgently need.
It is just another political ploy, and special people tactical political game playing, and continuing.

Government low income workers, and minimum wage workers, did you all gotten your promised raised as yet.
    Still waiting.

    4+ to 7,000ft runway they say, 2026?

Because there is no vision and no one in power can seem to see beyond the shiny things being waved in front of them the BVI, a gem of the Caribbean, will continue to be destroyed. The focus here is always on more more more. No thought ever seems to be given to improving the quality of our tourism only the quantity. Now our bays are flooded with cheap bareboat charters and all of the beautiful private yacht owners are gone. The cruise piers ever expand and bring in more cheap day trippers who clog our beaches and roads. Now expanding the runway so the likes of spirit airlines and frontier can make travel to the BVI as cheap as possible. Instead of regulating our waters we’ve flooded them with cheapness. Instead of making the country beautiful and attractive to those willing to invest and spend more than $12 for a painkiller at soggy were once again continuing to cheapen the BVI. Soon we will be just like St Toilet when we could be like St Barths. Sad to see that no one in power can seem to see beyond the immediate gratification of more more more.

In the 1970's, Virgin Island poet Sheila Hyndman (1958-1991) prophesied all that you refer to. Her message was unheeded then and it remains so today.

My book ''Sheila Hyndman Remembered", and this video, serve as an introduction to her life and work. https://youtu.be/aUb3nI3Nnkg

The fact that this government has REPEATEDLY broken its promises to: (1) not proceed with this project unless there was a persuasive business case for it; and (2) disclose that business case to the public, is more than enough to withold support for this project. As others here have said, what is it going to cost, and how will the massive debt be financed and serviced? Whenever a government operates in secret on a project where the secrecy is not due to a legitimate concern over national security, that tells you that something is seriously amiss.
