Action urged against hospital 'lawbreakers' – 3D Caller
The resident, who claimed to be Fletcher Scatliffe, took to the airwaves on May 3, 2013 as a caller on the 3D Show to express his feelings on the matter as candidly as he could.
“I want to go on record of speaking to the unacceptable behaviour at the Peebles Hospital that occurred a few days ago,” Scatliffe said.
“He didn’t do anything,” Scatliffe added in reference to Hon. Skelton’s apology, “I don’t know what he’s apologising for.”
The caller said he wanted to let the Minister know that the people of the Virgin Islands would not accept the kind of behaviour where “people coming from wherever they come from” were able to change the laws in the Territory without going to the legislature.
Scatliffe had two requests of the Minister, “The first thing I want Mr Skelton to do, is have the people who did that apologise to us publicly, this is the first thing we need.”
He added, “The second thing is, they must give the people back their money, because [they’re] stealing Doug, this is an illegal charge. The people must be given back the money that was taken from them.”
According to Scatliffe, whoever was responsible for the act, also needed to be dismissed.
“After you fire them, then Mr Skelton can apologise for the bad behaviour of these people,” he added “after recognising that they are people who don’t need to be there at the hospital working.”
He further suggested that the persons responsible for the "illegal charges" were persons who didn’t care about patients and about giving a service to the Territory.
Scaltiffe alleged that he had a disturbing personal encounter at the hospital’s pharmacy recently where he was left with the impression that the Pharmacist didn’t care whether he lived or died.
According to the caller, he was informed that there was a new system in place effective February 1, 2013 which invalidated any system that obtained prior to this.
“They refused to give me the medication, they didn’t care whether I lived or died or what happened,” Scatliffe contended.
The action by the hospital to charge seniors and minors for prescriptions done by the hospital (which is against the law) has created an uproar in the Territory with persons speaking out about it at every turn.
Questions have also been swirling about whether individuals would be refunded for the medication they were asked to pay for.
Both in the HOA as well as at a recent community meeting in the Third District, Hon. Skelton described the move as something that shouldn’t have happened and offered an apology for the apparent glitch.
