A different kind of art: VI youngster gives up painting for culinary arts
Gumbs was among five students presenting a culinary showcase at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Culinary Arts Centre in Paraquita Bay, Tortola, on Thursday July 16, 2020.
Passion
“I started out being an artist, but for some reason, I just couldn’t find that passion to express my true feelings,” he said, adding that he used to draw, create paintings, sketches, plans and logos.
“I recently got into cooking because I love watching the cooking shows and it was always fun. I am not someone who likes to sit down all the time; I like to keep going. So I found my passion with it, and it was a long journey, and at the end of my journey, I found success,” he remarked.
He said; however, the road has had its bumps.
“It has been challenging, finding my confidence, putting my thoughts on the plate I thought that was hard. But then came the baking and that’s when I struggled even more. I had never baked anything in my life other than pizza,” he said with a hearty laugh.
Gumbs will be graduating next year.
Baking course
According to Mr Clint Creque, the Chief Instructor, five students took the combined Introduction to Baking and Pastries and Cakes course which spanned a few weeks.
Only three students; however, successfully completed their Associate Degree programme and will graduate this year. They are Radiance Modeste, Jolece Fraser and Shamoy Davis.
Ganisha Abraham was the other student who will hopefully graduate next year.
