$5M Bank of Asia deposit ‘under consideration by Auditor General’- Gov Pruce

The Virgin Islands (VI) Deposit Insurance Corporation (VIDIC), with the intervention of the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (FSC), took the necessary action to shut down the operations of the Bank of Asia (BVI) Limited on May 28, 2025.
Following news of the bank’s closure, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) disclosed that as of April 30, 2025, the government had five million, thirty-five thousand, nine hundred and forty-seven dollars in the bank.
Premier Wheatley also said that to reassure taxpayers and ensure full transparency, he was requesting an internal audit to review this specific transaction.
Matter in hands of Auditor General
However, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), had written to Governor Pruce to conduct a separate investigation into the over five million dollar deposit.
When asked about this at his recent press conference on August 26, 2025, Governor Pruce said the matter is under consideration by the Auditor General.
“As you know, it is entirely for the Auditor General to determine how she conducts her investigations, and that includes the finalisation of her reports and their submission.”
Governor Pruce did not entertain the question further, adding, “There’s nothing more for me to add on that beyond the fact that the matter is with the Auditor General.”
