‘I wrote the Governor’ on $5M Bank of Asia deposit- Hon Myron V. Walwyn

He revealed this during the Continuation of the Seventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, during which he brought a Motion of No Confidence against Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Hon. Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).
“I want to make it clear that my only interest is from the government perspective. What happened in the bank that ain’t got nothing to do with me, that’s private business,” he said, adding, “As the member for the Sixth District and the Leader of the Opposition, my concern is surrounding the government’s culpability in putting five million in a bank that was showing various signs. That’s where my concern starts, and that is where it ends.”
Hon Walwyn argued that he is within his rights as a member of the Opposition to do that.
Bank of Asia & gov’t funds investigation
On May 29, 2025, the Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation (VIDIC), with the intervention of the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC), took the necessary steps to shut down the operations of the Bank of Asia (BVI) Limited.
Hon Walwyn said during Monday’s Sitting of the HoA that he specifically asked the Premier in a previous Sitting to give me the bank balances as at the end of December 2024 and as at the end of May 2025.
The Premier, in response to the question, disclosed that the government had five million, thirty-five thousand, nine hundred and forty-seven dollars ($5,035,947.00) in the bank during a Sitting of the HoA.
“When I wrote this question, there was nothing in the atmosphere about Bank of Asia.”
In June 2025, Hon Walwyn, in a statement, said he would be writing to Governor Pruce to investigate this five-million-dollar deposit, despite Premier Wheatley calling for an internal audit to review the transaction.
The Gov. is the only one who can get the answers
Basically calling Premier Wheatley a liar for misleading the public to believe that an internal audit will be made public, Hon Walwyn said, “I wrote the Governor, that is my responsibility. I wrote the Governor and asked for a full investigation.”
He said his reason for writing to Governor Pruce was “because there is a question that needs to be answered and an audit cannot answer it properly”.
Hon Walwyn said there is no dispute that the Minister of Finance could authorise money to go to any bank.
“The law gives him authority to do that…there’s no question about that. The question is, “Why would you put five million dollars in that bank at a time when you know or ought to have known the bank was in trouble? That is the question, a[n] audit cannot answer that,” he explained.
He added that the only person who can get an answer to that question is the Governor, “through the things under his portfolio”.
