MCNAMARA, Tortola, VI- Four rooms at Hotel Castle Maria have been declared a prison by Acting Governor David D. Archer Jr.

According to the instrument gazetted on May 19, 2026, Mr Archer Jr proclaimed and declared that rooms 311, 315 and 317 and the room referred to as the “Recreation Room”, being part of the premises known as Hotel Castle Maria, situated at McNamara, Tortola, “are declared to be a prison for the purposes of the Prison Ordinance, Cap. 166”.

It is provided in section 4A of the Prison Ordinance, Cap. 166 that the Governor may, by Proclamation published in the Gazette, declare any place to be a prison.

Immigrants apprehended in the territory have often been held in temporary facilities, including Hotel Castle Maria in McNamara.

In June 2025, the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) awarded a $370,000 contract to the Virgin Islands company Trojan Design and Development Ltd to design an immigration detention centre and manage its construction.

I am embarrassed to read that a section of a hotel has been declared a prison. How can anybody in their right mind be okay with this? How??

Money run the world Hotel Castle Maria has been a dumpling ground for immigrants for years. That place is run down and inhumane. It was either they turned it into a prison or close it down permanently.

Years ago, prisoners were escaping easily from there. They must have 24-hour security guards to keep them inside.

I do not think the hotel premises is run by the owners and it cannot be booked by visitors. I stand to be corrected but I think the government has the entire premises leased.

It’s fine. It’s the right hotel to do that with. Vernon doesn’t mine. Just don’t have murderers and rapist around there though. That’s too much for such a populated community. The once prestigious macnamara is now a prison cell. Ting to tell the king. It’s like role play. All is well.

These people are not elites, perhaps Island style elites. True elites will never live among something like that.or have that in their neighborhood

I hope tourists see this. Sometimes we need to keep subjects like this article off of social media.. Archer this is nothing to share just make yourself look incompetent. Why can you tell the public how you mess up the civil servants in the Public Service

As soon as possible these detainees need to go home. Or send them ballo for illegal entry. This is sickening now. Our tax money being wasted. We need better border control measures. Prices gone sky high and pay nar move no matter how dedicated of a worker you are. They finding all kind of appraisals and assessment that is unattainable so you do not get any increase in pay. The years 2027 to 2030 all politicians should come together and sort out important matters such as what we are going to do as it relates to food security. We need to become a country that is self sufficient. Covid, Irma and Maria seemed to have not taught us anything. I am not a born here but that does not matter. Here is where I live and will be burried. Let's start clearing crown land to do some large scale farming. Build back the fisheries building. I am so sorry but as Lavity said if there is no vision the people sure will perish. I can't believe that People here in the BVI are homeless and I am not talking about those that walk the street and cause destruction. This is really sad. Immigration need to form a task force that go out to check people papers. When I first came here tto live that's what they used to do. More police presence is needed. You bought new vehicles for the police to use to go picknip their lunch. I am so sad to see what have become of the BVI. Fix it JESUS, fix it! CCTV cameras all over and still no crime being solved. Traffic accidents on the rise. You get a new vehicle today and today someone lick up inna de back of it. The thieves getting too bold...that robbery on the pier park can become detrimental to all who live here and depend on Tourism. Price control bill where is it? People still can't afford to fix their roofs and retaining walls that were damaged in Irma and Maria. Drainage jorrible...roads horrible. I spit o. The road and a pothole appeared. Lord the BVI is an awesome place but we Virgin Islanders not taking care of all aspects of it

Hotel Castle Maria must be facing putting heads in the beds challenges. Is it a positive ad for the hotel, or, several rooms , is also serving as a prison? It is an open secret that Mount Olympus despite the BVI being self-governing, exerts “Unilateral Power.” Governor Daniel Pruce is flexing that unilateral power/reserved power again.

Moreover, hear dis ya! If you cannot do the crime, you should not do the time. Nonetheless, the colonialists have always been on incarcerating over educating the subjects. Every island in the region has a cookie cutter model prison, HMP( His Majesty’s Prison). The BVI has one, HMP . It was so important that it is now a Museum, ie, it gives museum a bad name. What was the Museum promoting, ie, a place where the beasts were housed. The BIG question is where is/was the His Majesty Secondary School(HMSS). Hit me up when you find it. The hard truth is the colonialists and colonialism is about control. Thus, the promoting of incarcerating over educating (planned ignorance). Studies have shown that it is more economical to spend on the front end than spending than on the back end. But the colonialists prefer spending on the back end. Is the UK funding the expense for the rooms at Hotel Castle Maria???? I will consider eating my shoes if they do.

Why don't they use the old prison instead of using it for a museum? Never heard of anyone escaping from there.

As usual you all are so &^%$$#@ emotional about everything that you are asking the wrong question! It is not about whether its a hotel and a prison, the REAL question is whether the property is fit foe human shelter in the first place. Stop with the fake outrage! That place in its currenr state is far more fit to be a prison than a Hotel!

Did UK-appointed Governor David Truce take off on vacation and provide instructions for Deputy Governor David Archer to have this Gazetted while hevwas out of the territory? Is this facility structurally sound? Is the place as run down as being projected or that is just speculation?

By the way, would be cheaper to give these folks a speedy but fair trial and then repatriate them back to their homelands? Will those accused of violent and property crimes be housed here?

Why doesn’t the Government just buy the entire hotel and declare all of it a prison or detention center? What a stupid little place buddy.

@ circus, true. That $350,000 could have purchased the entire building.

So, if this hotel is considered a prison, does that mean the government will still be paying monthly for it, even though no prisoners are in it? My understanding is that these rooms are now under government remit, so no other visitors can occupy them. Please tell me this is what you're taking my tax money to do?

If this is going be use as a holding cell for persons i believe it time to open our eyes to security
Firstly why is so much bush still around it it needs cleaning up so as if any personal try to escape and hide there is no bush to hide in
Secondly it need security lighting on a 360° for safe viewing
Thirdly place a few prison guards to do the physical contact of the personal and the private guards to secure the building and surrounding on a 24hr watch
Fourth have police presence at random cheeks on all persons
Fith have all persons finger print done and pic taken store in a data log in case of if escape and any crimes from robberies easy fingerprint can be identified if possible
