ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Commissioner of Police Mr Michael B. Matthews has confirmed to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) that the 2,353 kilos of cocaine that was discovered in Balsam Ghut on Friday, November 6, 2020, has been shipped out of the territory for destruction.

Commissioner Matthews told VINO today, February 8, 2021, that the drug was shipped out back in January 2021 after the Senior Magistrate gave a destruction order on the load.

No facility to destroy in one go in VI

When questioned on why the drug had to be shipped out of the territory for destruction, the Police Commissioner said the decision was taken since the territory does not have the facilities to destroy the drugs in “one go”.

Mr Matthews in a November 10, 2020, press conference said, “A total of 2,353 kilos of cocaine, I am told that is 2.3 metric tons, this was found in a container unit, a three-yard truck and a Ford Explorer jeep, all situated on this property.”

“This seizure has a conservative estimated street value of some $250 million. It is the largest seizure made in the BVI and the largest single seizure in the history of the RVIPF,” he said.

Two serving officers charged following the drug bust were Darren Davis, 41, a resident on Tortola and officer Emile Jimenez, 32.

Darren, along with his brother, Leston Davis were on November 10, 2020, jointly charged with 3 counts of Possession of Illegal Drugs with Intent to Supply; 1 count of Keeping a Firearm Without a License and 1 count of Possession of a Prohibited Firearm.

Three charged so far in historic haul

Then on December 3, 2020, Jimenez was charged with one count of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug to another, three counts of unlawful possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply, one count of keeping a firearm without a licence, and one count of unlawful possession of a prohibited weapon.

Commissioner Matthews did not provide details on where the drug was sent, how it was transported and by what means it will be destroyed.

I understand your reasoning ,but consider that the intent might be to demonstrate how little they trust the Police Dept. With the current COI, how would it look to have the VI destroy evidence against itself.

Further proof perhaps, of the extent of UK known corruption within the ranks.

    Makes sense.
COI in effect and ongoing. Would be self defeating for the UK to permit the VI to destroy evidence against itself.

Send out for destruction???, where? Yeah right , in a pig's eye.
If Scotland Yard come here and get on these murderers, gamblers and drug pushers trail, the local Government and Police force will end up in jail.
