ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Some 12 motor scooters were seized during a major road patrol operation at the weekend, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has stated.

Virgin Islands News Online had first reported on August 15, 2021, that a number of motor scooters were confiscated in a road sweep at Beef Island on Saturday, August 14, 2021.

Major sweep on road traffic violators

According to the RVIPF, in a press release today, August 16, 2021, in “another major sweep on road traffic violators, officers of RVIPF Road Policing Unit, the Armed Response Unit, the East End Police Station and the Marine Unit confiscated a dozen motor scooters and reported nine persons for charges for various offences including loud mufflers and driving while unlicenced and uninsured.”

It further said that in the operation on Saturday, two males were arrested and charged for driving without a driver’s licence and driving when not covered by insurance.

Persons driving both motor vehicles and scooters were reported for another 22 offences including driving with expired driver’s licence and driving an unlicenced vehicle, police stated.

Persons were also ticketed for another 12 offences, nine for riding without a helmet, and three missing identification plates.

Officers commended by CoP

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins shared his appreciation to the officers responsible for coordinating the large operation and bringing about its success.

He acknowledged the efforts of the commanders Acting Sergeant Kishon Leslie and his team, Acting Sergeant Bruce Huggins and the Armed Response Unit and Inspector Durville Carty and his officers from the Marine Unit.

In his commendations, according to the RVIPF press release, he noted that the majority of public complaints are related to scooter and motorcycle riders. He said he had received several calls and emails since the operation convening gratitude to the RVIPF.

Early this month, Police seized three motorcycles, two of which exceeded the legal engine size allowed in the VI -- one 1300cc, one 750cc and a 125cc. Charges were laid in these matters.

Please let these Young Men pay their applicable fines, secured legitimate access per Laws to Owining these Bikes. Also, let them have access to a mandatory class on the Rules of Opetati g these Bikes in the Territory. Please, even though there are some stubborn and hard head Youths out there, give them this Option before destroying their Bikes. No, excuse, but it ain't easy at all out here. First Time Offenders, GIVE THEM THIS OPTION! PLEASE! Second and beyond Offenders, bear the Consequences.

What i would like to know is when are they going to charge drivers just stopping on the high way, and doing so suddenly.
I almost ran into one this afternoon. don`t know if it was skill or luck , but were just able to swing away. Looks like anything goes on the streets of the BVI.

I am will to pay US$1,000 to the government for each bike taken off the street. Legal or illegal. My good night rest is more important than money. Will be having that conversation with the right people.

If there is a law which states that if I bought a bike for say $10,000.00 and I brought it in illegally the Police have the right to destroy it?. However, if I crash a 5.0 Mustang at 70 mph, licensed and insured the Police will not lay charges and my Mustang will not be crushed. We all must follow the laws not some and not some of the time.

This is a start. The east end Police see and hear this all of the time because they are passing right in front of their faces, so no surprise here. The bikes come up through Long Look, go to the top of Josiah's Bay hill where I live, then proceed down to Josiah's Bay Beach. I see and hear them all of the time. I wish they could get caught, plus it is before, during and after curfew, non stop. They are driving we tax paying citizens insane.

A scooter passed by my car the other day and there was hardly any sound except a soft putt putt. Why can't all scooters have this sound so we citizens cam relax our nerves? We wouldn't mind them at all then.

Get them all off the streets so the law abiding tax paying hard working folks can get a good nights sleep. They are disturbing our sleep and we have to go to work sleepy and tired while they have the luxury to lay up in mommy’s house and sleep all day.

It is past curfew, 1230 at night and a scooter just came up from Long Look and down to Josiah's Bay....again. You Police are deaf and lazy!!!!!!!! You all should be out catching these law breakers. I have to hear him twice, coming up from Long Look to go down, then coming up from Josiah's to go back to Long Look. Catch these curfew breakers. I'm giving them to you easy!

Here’s a thought….don’t publish the officers names. It makes them targets who will be afraid to do their jobs in the future.
Just like the perps names are withheld, do the same for the officers so they can continue to do their jobs without having to watch their back.
