ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Contrary to what some might believe, young people in the Virgin Islands want to work and are willing to be trained in order to get this done according to commentator and talk show host, Julio Sam Henry.

Commenting on the Speak Your Mind Show aired on April 12, 2014 Henry praised the recent job fair held in the East End/Long Look community for the Seventh and Eighth Districts and said the young people had been crying out that they did not feel that any attention was being paid to them.

The commentator said he saw the job fair hosted over the weekend by Seventh District Representative and Minister for Labour Hon. Kedrick D. Pickering and Eighth District Representative Hon. Marlon A. Penn as a step in the right direction and praised the support given by other legislators such as Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

“Sometimes I hear people out here talk about young people don’t want to work… I hate to hear that foolish talk,” Henry stated.

He noted that young persons needed encouragement, particularly in instances where they were slow to respond to positive initiatives, “work with them, talk to them, encourage them. Don’t go home and say they don’t want to work,” Henry challenged.

He denied that young people of the VI were lazy and said that there are a lot of young persons on the street looking for opportunities. “People want employment, they want good things, they want to be able to take care of themselves,” he added.

Dr Pickering commented prior to the event that, “Job fairs are one of the most remarkable recruiting tools used to bring together organizations from various sectors – including governmental and private – with job seekers; thereby creating a platform for open and wide-ranging employment opportunities”.

Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA had previously hosted a Job and Career Fair in January 2013 that was widely attended by various youths of the Territory.

Boss Sam go sit down from chatting p..s. There are many of the youth that don't want to work and they tell you that in your face. They don't want to work Sam, but they want money. There are many that want to work yes, that's a fact. But there are many that DONT want to work, that's also a fact. Stop pandering to people man if you going to run for elections just say so and done. You and Sowande are the same s..t. Talk talk talk just saying what people want to hear.

You are too grown to be telling those lies. They do want to work. It is sickening when you and white people use this tired excuse as an alibi to hire you and your white friends. It is clear that you haven't gotten off your high horse to talk with these hopeless youths.

From now on I think when they talking abaout youths who don't want to work they should call names b/c all the youths I see want work. Some cry and bawl about it and some don't but they all want to work and be independent. So if u know 2 who don't call their names and stop acting like 99% of the ones u see haven't tried.

If indeed they are working on Necker Island, kudos to Sir Richard! Perhaps, the wealthy locals can follow his example and put their money where their mouth is!

i am a student of the elmore stoutt high school. i know i want to work and pursue a career as soon as possible. this all goes back to this 6th form nonsense. why is my life being held back for people who don't care? why am i being held responsible for their so called "strupidness". my mom graduated in fifth. so did my dad. so did my grandparents. as far as i know, they're okay. so to Myron Walwyn, speak for some. If students are not taking their lives seriously, fail them, but do not group me with them because i want to work. i am very mature and maintain a 4.0 average. Dont hold me back!
P.S Please excuse my capitalization, not enough time.

Youth man, trust me, you are NOT being held back!! Do your extra year, learn as much as you can so that when you get out, you can go into the working world or into your own business much more mature and knowledgeable than before. There is nothing wrong with doing the extra year in school so I don't see why you would be against that. Perhaps you don't realize that the dynamics are changing and no longer are fresh out of schoolers being employed as Tellers or Secretaries anymore. Even these jobs that used to be called entry level long ago are requiring more of their employees. Once you do your best academically it doesn't matter if you did school for 5 or 6yrs, it's your attitude and accomplishments that count. That extra year might make all the difference in the world in terms of choosing a college or career. Stay in school boss, trust me! There is no need to complain about school.

NDP was suppose to help the labour situation here. Now all you see is a set of more white people through the place. Why aren't our people being trained? Why must it always be a white person coming in and staying in? Who is doing the checks and balance?

Can someone please find Sam Henry some meaningful employment? It is obvious being a taxi driver he has too much time on his hands and then his brain starts to get in the way.
