ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Four young people received awards for creating and producing video presentations about the innovations of broadband internet and its importance in everyday life as part of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (TRC) marking of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day being observed worldwide today.

The award presentation took the form of a luncheon at Maria’s By The Sea today July 1, 2015 and saw presentations from the Chief Executive Officer of the TRC Guy L. Malone and its Chairman C. Michael Thomas.

The winners were Leon Adolphus, Hakeem Gravesande, Ken Williams and Donielle Hodge. With Gravesande the overall winner, he and a family member will attend an upcoming telecommunications conference to be held in Miami from July 25 to 29, 2015.

The theme of the video competition was ‘Improving Lives Through Broadband Innovation’. It was meant for persons between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age.

In addition to the trip for two to the conference, Gravesande also won a tablet and $500. Donielle Hodge won a smartphone as the fourth place winner, Ken Williams won a smartphone plus $100 as third place winner, and Leon Adolphus won a tablet plus $200 as second place winner in the competition.

They all produced short videos depicting the uses and benefits of broadband internet in everyday life.

Speaking at the event, Malone said that since the TRC began marking the yearly celebration in 2009, it has always made youth the focus of its activities and this year was no different.

He said the TRC decided to capture the voice of young people regarding the importance of broadband internet. “The videos produced is evidence that broadband affects young people in everything that they do,” he said.
