ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool, has announced that his Ministry will be commissioning a study to identify the present and foreseeable demand for water in the Territory.

The Minister made the announcement today, April 4, 2013 during the seventh sitting of the second session of the second House of Assembly (HOA).

According to the Works Minister, a prior study conducted by BiWater in 2010 suggested that the demand for water would be 4million imperial gallons per day for 2013 with an estimated population of 25,000 persons.

Hon. Vanterpool highlighted that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has identified on its website that the Territory has a key challenge in having limited natural fresh water resources.

He stated that the government acknowledges that the Territory does indeed have a water shortage situation and added that it was a decades old problem that successive governments have sought to address.

In touting water conservation efforts around the Territory, Hon. Vanterpool said, “water conservation is necessary to ensure a sustainable water supply for future generations.”

Hon. Vanterpool said his Ministry has begun to implement short, medium and long term plans to address the Territory’s present water shortage problem.

He referred to a number of “water management measures” being implemented in various areas around the Territory such as Ridge Road, Nottingham Estate and Cane Garden Bay where water supply to the areas are limited. Hon. Vanterpool stated that this is unsatisfactory and assured that government is working to remedy the situation.

The Works Minister stated, “our expectations are that Biwater would begin to deliver their 2.3 million gallons of water by the end of the next twelve months.”

After announcing a spate of additional plans to remedy the water shortage situation in the Territory, the Minister said, “I recently learnt that the Town and Country Planning Authority has approved the Biwater plans, based on the new route authorised by Cabinet, to extract water from the sea, and dispose the brine into the sea.”

      Paige Summers", I share your pain, but nothing is going to change soon unless the opposition keep the pressure on the Mark to release Biwater to do their job. Remember the longer it takes Biwater to produce water the more money Ocean Conversion makes from the Baughers Bay water Plant, and thats money in BVI Investment Club pocket. And you know the TT Monster and all the rest of them government biggers own the Investment Club.

      I just did the math, and it says. $50,000 a month times 12 = $600,000 a year
      $2.50 a 1000 gallons @ a million a day = $912,500 a year
      TOTAL =$1,512,500 a year.
      Thats right, Ocean Conversion will collect from government/us poor tax payers, one million five hundred and twelve thousand five hundred dollars for a year from the Baughers Bay Plant. And the Plant belongs to Government

    Mark, please go sit down. This corruption trip u and the NDP on by keeping Biwater from producing water is only so Ocean Conversion could continue raping the Government Treasury from the Government own Baughers Bay Plant at the rate of $786,000 (yes seven hundred and eighty six thousand dollars) every six (6) months.

    Bunch of crooks
