ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championship got underway on Tuesday July 8, 2014 in the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex with a resounding, 82-46, victory for Dominicana against Barbados in game one in Group A and an even bigger success for the Jamaicans over Guyana in Group B.

The first quarter of the opening game ended with the Dominicana (Dominican Republic) already ahead by 13 at 21-8 and that lead extended early in the second period with Yamel Vanessa Abreu driving her team. She took a pass from Eyandra Mollino Cavallo to make it 25-8; she then made a steal and scored, before missing two free throws.

At 27-8 Winmalecia Bowen started a mini revival for Barbados picking off an offensive rebound to score, but it was to be short-lived as Abreu stole from Dale Marie Cumberbatch to set up a move that saw Dominicana move the ball between Abreu, Melissa Santos and Wanda Gomez. Surgeiry Monsac added two more.

Cumberbatch went 2/2 from the charity stripe, but then the move of the match with Yohana Morton playing a one, two with Santos before moving the ball out wide to Juladdy Zupata and then back to Morton who scored.

Morton scored two more and the half ended 37-13 to the Dominicana.

The third quarter saw Gomez cause early havoc and a score by Marlem Cacares made it 41-18. Abreu went 2/2 from the free throw line and a sublime dribble and passing move from Morton found Abreu under the rim to make it 45-18.

Cacares popped in a couple more a few moments later to bring up the Dominacana’s half century and added two more on a fast break as the game became for all intense and purposes, over.

Cumberbatch was doing her best to keep the Barbadians interested but the break came as a relief with the score 59-29.

The final stanza was really all she wrote for the Barbados girls as Jennifer Estrella, Morton, Andreina Paniaqua and Genesis Martinez all splashed long range efforts from downtown. Cumberbatch and Ashlee Daniel showed some spark and fighting spirit. Estrelle sank a two at speed and Gomez spun, twisted and scored and also added an extra point.

The final score was 82-46.

Calcares top scored with 16 points for the Dominicana, Gomez picked off 12 rebounds and Morton 5 assists. For the outplayed Barbados team Cumberbatch notched 18 points, and Bowen 12 rebounds.

The turnout is poor because it's not about politics or minding people business so nobody's interested. Next week you will hear it's NDP's fault why CBC tourney flopped, just like it's NDP's fault that nobody gives a shit about local sports on a whole. It rains later? Those damn NDP. Any issues you have going forward, just insert 'NDP' and it will make you feel better. Have a nice day ya'll.

Why isn't there a team representing the BVI?
