“Where are the jobs the Minister promised us?” – Local residents ask

-We don’t have money to hire says BVIHSA Chairman John I. Cline
Many VIslanders are claiming of not getting job opportunities as promised when the new Peebles Hospital was officially opened on December 17, 2014. Photo: VINO
According to Chairman of the BVIHSA Bishop John I. Cline, “So it has become necessary for us to retrain and to reposition people internally before we look outside. It is not that we don’t want to hire people, we just don’t have the money to do it so we hire as many persons as we can but we are not able to hire all that we think we need because of financial restraints.” Photo: VINO

“I am hereby making another appeal to our people, young and young at heart, to prepare and position yourselves for the exciting new jobs being created in the healthcare sector. The first phase of the new hospital will see the addition of 109 new jobs, 70 in the division of nursing alone, as well as jobs in medical coding and billing, and the introduction of dialysis technicians and scrub techs,” Hon Ronnie W. Skelton had stated at the opening ceremony. Photo: VINO
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – At the opening ceremony for the new Peebles Hospital, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Ronnie W. Skelton had promised that a large number of jobs would be created for especially the young people but several residents have complained that locals are not getting any of the jobs.

“I am hereby making another appeal to our people, young and young at heart, to prepare and position yourselves for the exciting new jobs being created in the healthcare sector. The first phase of the new hospital will see the addition of 109 new jobs, 70 in the division of nursing alone, as well as jobs in medical coding and billing, and the introduction of dialysis technicians and scrub techs,” Hon Skelton had stated.

Indeed, especially with the transition from one building to the other, a number of job openings were already on the board for the taking and many of the unemployed, lots being of the youth unemployed population of the Virgin Islands, attempted to grab hold of some of those job as they said they trusted the words of their Minister for Health but were shamefully disappointed.

“We not getting the jobs, that was just a political speech and we were fooled once again. So many of us, I myself went to get even a simple job and there was nothing for me,” one VIslander told this news site.

Another claimed that she was made to understand that the jobs that most young and middle aged VIslanders are qualified to fill were given to persons who are already in the system, leaving positions that require the importation of labour. “They give people in the hospital system already those positions, mind you they could have given us who have no jobs and are well qualified than most of them already in the system...we out of a job and had our hopes built up and then dropped to the curb,” said another.

“It is sad that we the younger generation committed to going to school, passing our examinations, gone to college, got our associates, want a job in our own country to help us build our future, some of us want to go on to higher studies but we can’t do it so we need jobs that we can save to go off and further our studies but we not being given a fair opportunity to do this, especially us young women.”

Contacted about these concerns, Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) John I. Cline said one of the questions asked that addresses the very concerns was “How do we intend to close the gap between the $40M that is given and the $45-$46M that is needed?”

He said it is through human resource management, “So it has become necessary for us to retrain and to reposition people internally before we look outside. It is not that we don’t want to hire people, we just don’t have the money to do it so we hire as many persons as we can but we are not able to hire all that we think we need because of financial restraints.”

He said that currently the BVIHSA is trying to fill the human resources needs of the hospital on a ‘shoe string’ budget.

You are a hypocrite and definitely not wise.

One time you supporting NDP ideas then you against them. Then you against those that defend their rights and you hide behind the blog.

Get a life and your name should be "MIX UP."

A family member of mine who was working as an RN in the States for years returned home in hopes of securing a position at the new hospital but no, they were only hiring who they had in mind already.

So you are not qualified for any jobs but want to replace somebody who was already working at the old hospital? What do you really think will happen? Spend some of the time that you are "waiting" for a job becoming qualified for something useful!

Well the NDP sat on a wall and the great fall is coming.

All I can say is the message of Mr. Osborne is of GREAT merit.

"BEWARE of those that will drive your well being and businesses into the ground so that you will have to BEG THEM for bread, scholarships, jobs, and handouts!"

How many of the people complaining have something to offer the Hospital? You cannot get a job at the Hospital just because you are from here and vote in elections. You must have something to offer, you must be qualified to a certain extent, the Hospital is not Public Works or Solid Waste where you can just laze around pretending to be busy when it suits you. It's a very important entity and if you want to be a part of it, then get trained. The college recently announced a few new classes in the medical field but most people won't see that because the focus is usually on bad news and fear mongering. Further, I have seen many locals being employed to new jobs at the Hospital within the past few months. Just because you didn't get a job doesn't mean no jobs are being picked up by locals. If 10 locals come forward with positive stories about how they got jobs at the Hospital we would never see a story on that, or if we do, it will be a story trying to paint it black in some way.

Ms. Osborne expected government to finance his private venture and then turn around and pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase the same thing they financed from him.

This place has more opportunities then anyone could imagine. STOP LOOKING FOR GOVERNMENT JOBS!!! The marine industry is booming, the so called down island people are still trying to fight there way into the BVI, have to ask yourself why. Expats show up daily taking advantage of opportunities.

The problem with some of you is the days of the 50,000.00 petty contract and hand out have come to an end and you can't just keep wasting tax payers money doing a half @$$ job!!!

The season is in people are hiring if you don't want a job create an opportunity for yourself. People are cooking food and selling, vegetables are being sold on the side of the road. Get ya behind out and do what you have to do to take care of your family.

Many of the successful BVI Landers did any job to get ahead, now you look at them and figure you should have the same

Fisherman never have fish left over in my village it all sells!!! Stop complaining and go look work instead of trying to take over the head position at the hospital with a high school certificate

Wah you jumping on Mr. Osborne for dude? I'm sure where he is right now is a better position than where you are and he has a right to look for what ever job he wants. That is democracy and self empowerment. Something that NDP is not promoting but they come up here doing half done job on children park spending endless money on something that cost more than the basketball gym that can't finish.

You sound too selfish with your bias blog. Tax payers dollars is for everybody not NDP and funny man only.

Ayo got Orlando gray hair dropping out!

Yes you ungrateful BVIslanders! Stop looking Government jobs, hospital jobs or management jobs! Never mind you hold post-graduate degrees and have years of international experience abroad! Stop looking office jobs at all, or any jobs for that matter! Make your OWN jobs! Never mind your years of education and experience, get out in a boat go catch fish! Get down in the dirt go grow food! Go sells drinks or food on the side of the road! Leave those other jobs to those who are "QUALIFIED."

This nancy story about reposition of previous workers have nothingg to do with been able to give jobs to locals is out right lies. I personally have seen a good amount of non be longer workers employed at the hospital recently while bvi landers wait outside hoping for a job in their own country.

So you are telling me that there are a bunch of BVIslanders, qualified to work in the health services and medical profession and are just home jobless? Give me a @#$%^& break. Perhaps the reason why some non-bvislanders are being employed by the Hospital is because they have worked in Hospitals before? Until we let go of the Government job or Trust Company job mentality nothing will change.

It would be a very powerful statement if all the nurses and other health care professionals in the BVI who are currently without a job, got together for a rally right in front of the hospital. Let them see all the people who are citizens of the BVI that are qualified for those good jobs and aren't getting them. If you want to bring about change, the first rule is to show up.

YES! Great idea, bring your resumes and references just in case someone gives a dam! For my part, everyone I know with qualifications and experience in the medical field has gone back to the US where the jobs are plentiful. We want to come home, but we gotta eat!

BC is a big hypocrite and the Minister of Health has his head in the sand, giving perfect, hopeful speech but not investigating what is really going on down there, although the public has been crying out for mercy in our own country, the top administrators busy directing any extra money that can be used to hire people to their b**k acc.....

They are hiring friends, family and cronies. They are hiring people who have no qualifications for jobs and overlooking applications that are fitted for the jobs. Administration is far from operations in the sunshine. Down there needs a thorough and INDEPENDENT AUDIT for it is full of corruption, conflict of interest and lies after lies.

Have no money, then why not cut the bonuses and on call payments that were given to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief of Medical Staff, Director of Hospital and Human Resources Officer last year and use this money to hire the people. These salaries are already high in the sky. The CEO has a salary of $150,000.00; Chief of Medical Staff $140, 000.00.

It is greed that is running the hospital, the top suck everything for themselves, then CRY government ain't giving them enough money and make the government look bad. The Chairman of the Board directing everything to his company-- Infinite at high prices now he here saying it doesn't have money to hire people who need work.
New hospital, new fancy building at a glance but check deep inside of operations and see corruption on a new and gander scale and our officials are deaf, blind and dumb. Government in the sunshine, which sunshine?

Let me say this and take it how you want. The private medical facilities in the BVI R BEGGING FOR QUALIFIED WORKERS. THEY WILL PAY ALMOST 2 X WHAT THE HOSPITAL IS PAYING WITH BENEFITS. If you are good at what you do, go out into the private industry and Get Paid!!!

Only the highest positions in Government get paid and those jobs are very limited. Geme gene gene People who are very good at what they do and present themselves in a professional way never have a problem getting jobs. Matter of fact they can find jobs anyplace on earth
