We have a war to fight - Chairman Fraser
“Me being the Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party says that I am the leader of the party… it means that I am the leader of the Territory and it means that the entire Territory gets the same treatment from Jost Van Dyke to Anegada,” he said to rousing applause from the audience. “…and you can take that to the bank,” he continued.
“There is a war out there to fight and I need warriors to fight the war. We cannot have candidates who do not have guts, it’s going to take a lot of guts out there for the next battle that is before us,” stated Hon Fraser as he called on persons to start the process of soliciting candidates for the VIP for the 2016 elections.
“That process begins tonight (last night),” he stressed. He said that in the process it is necessary for each district to have a committee and he will personally be visiting every district to ensure that there is a committee and will go as far as sitting with them and even inviting then to a meeting of Third District which he called a model.
He also assured business sector that the change in the leadership of the VIP will not result in any form of alienation, isolation of victimization as he said that relationship that once existed with Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE will continue. “There is nothing that I am going to bring to this table that would disenfranchise any business in this community,” said Hon Fraser.
Party of the People
“This is the party of the people and it will continue to be a party of the people,” said Hon Fraser as he made it clear that statement was not for campaign purposes. “We don’t forget our people.”
He appealed to the members and supporters to stick with the VIP and assist in bring in others, “Bring a friend.”
Last night’s process in the VIP has been described as a historic one since it was the first time that the chairmanship of the party was challenged through the democratic process of an election in its 43 years of existence.
“History has been made here tonight, not that you have the greatest chairman, that’s not what it is, that’s not the history that has been made. The history that has been made is that the Virgin Islands Party has over the last 43 years had only two chairmen and those two chairmen had succeeded each other seamlessly…” stated Hon Fraser.
The Yearning
“There is a yearning here, from the Virgin Islands Party, for relief in this Territory, they can’t take it anymore,” said the newly elected chairman of the VIP as he spoke of the turnout of members to the party’s election.
He made that statement as he was touching on the turnout of delegates to participate in the democratic process. He said that based on his observation it was curiosity more than anything else that drove persons to do the right thing.
This he said was evident in the 75 of 76 delegates who showed up at the meeting, “You performed admirably; you have done your job.”
He noted that it would take a collaborative effort of working together of himself, Hon Fahie and all and sundry to bring about the desired relief to the Territory.
Campaigner like I have never seen before
First District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie was the key challenger for Hon Fraser and in giving his victory speech, Hon Fraser said, “I want to say to Mr Fahie…. You are a campaigner like I have never seen before; we have never crossed paths during this process.”
“But I kinda knew your every move and I can’t keep up with you, you are younger than I am but God! I had to use my head,” he said.
He told Hon Fahie that there was nothing to be ashamed of, “Because I have worked hard. You have done well.” He congratulated Hon Fahie for the efforts and his accomplishments.
For the past two and a half years that the two sat in the House of Assembly on the same side of the room, Hon Fraser alluded to the fact that they both did work together very well.
The ‘Old Warrior’
It was fifteen years of working together for Hon Fraser and the outgoing chairman of the VIP Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, who Hon Fraser described as the ‘Old Warrior’. “…I have been nothing but loyal to you. I may not have sided with everything you said and did but when I was directed to do something I did it...”
He alluded to the what was seemingly the principle when a minister failed to follow orders, “Hit the road jack or execute,” he told Hon O’Neal that he valued the experience that he got from him including the opportunities that were given him during the time they worked together.
