ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Bayside Blazers returned to the Territory yesterday, July 22, 2018, after a successful basketball tournament in Dutch St. Maarten.

The BVI Team is the champion winning the Battle of the Fittest for three consecutive years: 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In the final championship game they defeated Dutch St. Maarten, the host country and the only team to have defeated the BVI Bayside Blazers in regular season games. BVI Team rose to the occasion when it counted, in the championship finals, beating them 88 to 64. All games were played at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium.

Team Captain, Ray D. Victor said his team “believed in each other, which contributed to the win”.  He thanked all the persons including coaches, management and sponsors who made the trip possible.

At the final game, July 21, 2018, top scores were Victor with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Killven M. Samuel was next with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Cleo D. Sears had 11 points, 1 rebound and 2 steals; and Jason A. Edwin came in with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assist.

Willock proud of team

Manager of the Team, Julian Willock said he is very proud of the team and also thanked “all those who contributed to make the trip possible.” He said the BVI Basketball team had some of the best talents, both here and with our two overseas players, adding that he had “confidence in his coaching staff”.  Mr Willock said the team was also well prepared and he looks forward to next year.

Meanwhile, Mr Victor was named the league’s MVP and also won the three point shootout.  Shamar A. George won best defensive player of Tournament.

The BVI Team was made up of players: Ray D. Victor (Team Captain)  Killven M. Samuel, Cleo D. Sears, Kimani T. Stevens, Dion M. Blyden, Shamarr A. George, Jason A. Edwin, Daven D. Ottley, Dextroy D. Manswell  and Akeme A. Smart. In addition Team Personnel who travelled to St. Maarten were: Julian Willock- Owner/Manager, Derrick R. Varlack- Assistant Manager, Ronald Simmonds- Head Coach, Trevor M. Stevens- Assistant Coach, Karl M. Scatliffe- Trainer, Kennedy H. Bass- Team Advisor and Scorer

The Team’s Platinum sponsor is the Bank of Asia.
