VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Embattled Leader and Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP 1), Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL) is setting the record straight that the voting machines to be used in the upcoming 2019 General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI) will not be used for elections rigging.

Mr Walwyn, who is also the Education and Culture Minister, made his position clear on Wednesday evening, January 16, 2019, during a public NDP meeting held on Virgin Gorda (VG).

Citizens Skeptical

“Now I want to make something very clear, and I want to say to you now because around elections you are going to hear a lot of things… a lot of stories and I want to urge you, do not act on melee and foolishness,” Mr Walwyn told those in attendance at the meeting.

He inquired from the small crowd gathered about whether they had heard about certain negative conversations around the voting machines.

Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Six District Candidate, Mr John M. Samuel had recently slammed the NDP government over its rush on implementing the voting machine as citizens have raised concerns.

The new DS 200 Precinct Scanners and e-poll books were tested by the Election Office a few months ago and Mr Samuel in a Facebook post asked, “Where are the results from the public review on this?”

According to Mr Walwyn, “People suggesting that the machine gon do all kind of things, and people gon put things in the machine beforehand and so forth, do not be discouraged by that, it is nothing but propaganda,” he warned.

Just a counting machine – Walwyn

In explaining the process of the vote counting machine, Hon Walwyn said, “So the thing goes in, the machine tabulates it for you… at the end of the day, you get your figures who won which district and who won At-Large.”

“You going to go and vote pretty much in the same way you voted before. What the machine is, [is] a counting machine, that’s all it is,” he uttered.

The NDP Chairman continued, “But if you listen to what was being said by other persons, it would make you think you don’t want to go to the polls to vote… because… something is going to happen.”

“So I needed to make sure that I set the records straight for you on that,” he said.

Mr Walwyn’s assurance of no plans for elections rigging also came as he challenged his political opponent, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), to meet him at the upcoming 2019 polls, as an At-Large Candidate in the General Election.

Many voters throughout the Territory, especiallythe young and the elderly have claimed that they do not trust the NDP and the machines could be an attempt by the group to steal the 2019 Elections.

You seems to know a whole lot about those machines. Did you went to examine them before they were purchased and got a crash course on their usage. I would have think it was the supervisor of election who supposed to provide all this details about the machines.

How many of you know that any machine can be manipulated... including these that are said to be stand alone/indepentent of any network. e.g if you hack or in some manipulated the software before hand.
Its output is not as simply its it may seem. binary codeing or 0 and 1's make up most computer/machine back ground or software.
So tell me how is any machine safe?

Here is a news flash. We need to stop providing expert opinion on things that we do not know our a...s from a hole in the ground about. Is Walwyn an IT guru and power user? What firewall is in place to prevent/minimize potential tampering. Using electronic voting machines in the up coming general election is a rush that could result in results happening counter to voters desire. A high level of confidence in electronic voting is needed before they are used in a national election.

Go and vote! Just utilize the manual ballots. Don't let the machine scare or change your mind. To ensure accuracy and accountability, exit Poll Surveys should be taken. But then again, its not all votets are likely to be free to say who they voted for due to reprecussions.
