Wade N. Smith In! as PVIM D5 Candidate; resigns as Commissioner of Customs
Mr Smith made this announcement at the official launch ceremony of the PVIM at their Fish Bay, Tortola headquarters, noting that his alignment with the PVIM will allow him to contest the 2019 elections in the VI alongside several other candidates now with the party.
Earlier today, Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) had reported that former Deputy Premier, Attorney General and Deputy Governor R. Danica Penn QC, will also run at-large with the PVIM.
This was further confirmed to VINO by PVIM Leader Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), even as Ms Penn was speculated to run with Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) who has formed his own political party, Progressives United (PU).
PVIM now bigger
The NDP 2, now the PVIM is made up of several National Democratic Party (NDP) members–having issues with the new co-leader of Government, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL)–who left the main NDP once Mr Walwyn became the leader in an internal election earlier this year.
Tonight marks the official announcement of Mr Smith as part of the PVIM slate to contest the upcoming General Election which must be held by April 16, 2019, according to Governor of the Virgin Islands, Augustus J. U Jaspert.
Prominent PVIM members include former NDP Chaplain, Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull, aka ‘Mitch,’ for District 2 and fired Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Skelton who recently confirmed his leadership of the party.
Hon Turnbull has since been vocal about his departure from the NDP, citing frustration amongst several reasons why he ultimately decided to jump ship.
