ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, welcomed the St Vincent and Grenadines team to the Territory yesterday, Friday September 19, 2014, ahead of the Association’s 40th Anniversary International Friendly Match on Sunday September 21, 2014.

That game is scheduled for the A.O. Shirley Ground at 5pm and marks the first time the teams have met in a decade, when the scores were tied 1-1.

The Coach of the Virgin Islands team, Avondale Williams, was playing that day and also hails from St Vincent, so there is much more at stake than just the excitement the fans can expect to see.

“It will be a very competitive game on Sunday, the squad has been training hard, we have some fresh faces adding to the playing depth and no major injury concerns ahead of Sunday,” commented Williams.

“Obviously I know a lot about how they play the game in Vincy, but am more concerned with how we play and I’m sure what should be a large crowd will be entertained with some fast-paced exciting football,” he said.

The Vincy Heat, who are currently ranked 106th in the CONCACAF Rankings table as opposed to the Virgin Islands 199th position, will be led by Myron Samuel. “We have a very young team, averaging around 21. We are hoping for a good game and let everyone see our talent and make sure we play well as a team. We are looking forward to giving the crowd a victory!” he said.

Manager Othnel Douglas also noted the team was very young, but had been practicing for the last 8 months. “Our team is young, but we are hoping to do well and continue what we have been achieving in the likes of the Windward and Caribbean Cups,” he said.

The International Friendly marks a culmination of Anniversary Events held by the BVIFA, which has included Youth Football, Women’s games and now the Men taking centre stage.

“We have tried to involve everyone in the events” noted Bickerton. “The Boys have been working hard and played a couple of games against Laraza from the USVI, the U15 Girls beat Laraza 5-0 and the Women’s team went down 3-0 to the USVI, but this game, especially for the Boys, will and it will be an opportunity to see the level of senior football played in the Caribbean and the quality of play that has to be reached,” he said.

The entry on Sunday is just $5 and there will be plenty of entertainment, refreshment and giveaways by the likes of Digicel to keep what is expected to be a large crowd richly entertained both on and off the field of play.

Speedy’s has a special Ferry service which departs Virgin Gorda at 1pm.

The BVIFA is also reminding Fans that tickets are available from Mr. Nice Guy, Speedy’s ticket Office and also the BVIFA Office across from the Botanic Gardens. FIFA rules state that no match tickets can be sold on game day at the venue, so as a special dispensation the BVIFA will be selling tickets from the Multi Purpose Sports Complex up until half time on Sunday.

Ok haters stop the ranting and let the game begin. You people fuss over everything. Would it be the first time people from another country is representing the BVI or for that matter play against the country of their birth? It's happening all over the globe.
