ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Commentator Douglas Wheatley has recommended the Virgin Islands (VI) begin growing marijuana as part of an established industry within the Territory.

On the Speak Out BVI radio programme aired on March 11, 2014 Wheatley said the Virgin Islands has some of the best marijuana growers in the world and should take advantage of this.

“We have people here who are the best marijuana growers in the world, they’ve beaten those in Jamaica and those in St Maarten…. they’re good at it,” Wheatley stated.

The commentator noted that some of the Territory’s young men and young women already know to cultivate the crop, are happy to do so and want to be involved in the land.

“I think this is an industry that we can develop,” he continued.

According to Wheatley, it was a waste that Police had destroyed some 3500 marijuana plants recently.

He noted that the marijuana industry looks to be a promising industry for medicinal purposes in the Territory and suggested that the greenhouses at Paraquita Bay be put to use in this arena.

“We have some greenhouses up at Paraquita Bay, we say we can’t find any use for them. I think one of them could be used to grow marijuana for medicine purposes,” he suggested.

The commentator bemoaned that outsiders have been dominating the local tourism industry and suggested that locals should take charge. He further cautioned that locals should not lose the opportunity to become front runners in the marijuana industry ahead of outsiders.

“They had to come from somewhere to enjoy them and to start up these businesses here. We live here, we enjoy it here but somehow or the other we didn’t start the businesses or we were not given the incentive to start the businesses and so they came in and started the businesses,” Wheatley said.

“Don’t let them have to come in and start the marijuana business,” he cautioned, “we can start that here, because we have a lot of experience in it.”

You are so correct!!!!! In two weeks Colorado saw 2 million in tax revenue. That would go a long way to getting the coffers built up and then we wont have to go begging for money when we need to improve our water, medical, roads, power. The benefits of this are more than apparent throughout the counties legalizing this. Now that would be a fun course at the college! We would have to put it beside the culinary class....LOL

I have been saying this for years and no politician wanted to hear me. Good for you Mr. Wheatey. Maybe they will listen to a popular voice now and move forward with this. It makes so much sense ans can bring tremendous revenue fir the BVI.

How Doug know how good they are at it? Seems like he had a sample before the show lol. Seriously though, he might be on to something but hey, we're a 'Christian' society so that will be shot dead on arrival no matter how much sense it 'might' make.

Soooooo tell me something how do you know BVI have such good ganga planters, you been testing the merchandise or what. Funny, rather than promoting the use of those green houses to grow FOOD to feed the ppl of this country you're idea is to push for the growing of weed. First of all government have to pass the law to legalize it & we know that's not going to happen so why not put your energy into something more pressing such as (like I said) promoting farming

There is no such thing as medical marijuana or medical ganga any more than there is medical alcohol or medical moringa. There is cannabis sativa, and it should never have been made a banned substance. Period.
