ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With the challenge of getting trained nurses back to serve in the territory after studying abroad, the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) has turned to the United Kingdom (UK) for help.

United Kingdom Healthcare Ambassador to the Overseas Territories Professor Ian Cumming said this was one of the requests coming from the territory.

Uk would 'very much' want to help

“Already actually in this visit is what more can we do, for example, to help train nurses here in the Virgin Islands, so people don’t have to go overseas to be trained as nurses,” Professor Cumming said in an interview with host of the Honestly Speaking Radio Programme, Claude O. Skelton-Cline, on June 8, 2021.

“Because once people go overseas to be trained it is quite hard to get them back again and if we can actually train locally in your excellent hospitals and health care facilities and your excellent trained nurses perhaps with some online support with the academic component we can grow our own here in the Virgin Islands,” he added.

He said he would “very much” want to help in that regard.

In April 2021, Government passed amendments to the Nurses and Midwives Bill to allow for the registering and licensing of nurses and midwives in the Virgin Islands.

The move was to bring the territory on par with other regional and international guidelines in that sector.

Health Minister Hon Carvin Malone (AL) said at the time of the introduction of the amendments to the Bill, that it would allow for the Nursing and Midwifery Council to consult on the establishment of educational programmes in nursing, ensure that training is linked to registration and licensure as well as the standard of practice that is in line with the standards set by the council for safe practice.

“The council will assist with educational institutions, hospitals, persons or organisations on matters pertaining to nursing, midwifery and assistive nursing education, training and practice, and to assist nursing schools and other educational institutions when requested in the development of curricula for nursing education. This will correct the current gap where persons trained at our local college will be considered for registration, certification by the council, opening up employment and possibilities to them at a wider scale,” Hon Malone had said.

Sounds good but for a population of 30,000? We need some scanners and radiation beam machines though.

      @ need more than Training,
I applaud you for your suggestions. We also need better cooks, most of the food in the VI is most mucus forming food.

Getting local organic food needs more than agriculture at pari; most of the waste land could be planted during the raining seasons. People have land but do no farming, wont it be best to start leasing to farmers , who can actual plant the place during the raining season. Or plant fruit trees ,so that the VI can have a host of seasonal fruits. Stop wasting time with the imports and do something about the food industry. If you buy strawberry and don't know how to package it for the fridge it get spoil. Natural Caribbean fruits do not spoil that easily and do not need re- fridgeration.

This is great news, but a bug part of the reason why persons at times don’t return it’s because of the salary they’re being paid on return. Though the salary has improved since years ago it could still be better .. if one has to compare the salary here versus the US, it’s incomparable thus this will encourage one to remain in the US.. sadly but true .

I work as a LPN at one of the major Hospitals in NYC. The salary that I am making is triple what the nurses is making in the BVI. The pay that the nurses in the BVI is getting paid is a Nurses Aid salary.

This is great. The UK is looking out for us again; RN ship, the vaccines, the C o I at no charge to us to root out corruption and nepotism; and now help to train our nurses. Thank you UK. We are so lucky to be a UK Territory!!

Oh please! Once they qualify what stops them from leaving and going where there is high demand for their services and are paid five times more? That might be a small part of the solution but we really know what the true problem is.

Here we go. Complaining about the colonial master on the one hand and yet going to them with outstretched palms on the other hand.

the issue is the crap pay and the fact that they can be paid so much more elsewhere.

Offer good packages. Improve the systems within the hospital, treat them fairly, offer continuous training and professional development. It is farfetched to expect NYC nurses' salaries for many reasons but I believe that a good package can help.

Another problem is that the persons who does the hiring prefer to hire their own country people than locals. Many locals came back home seeking employment and were refused while we see the expats get the jobs.

Ever think that's maybe because their fellow country people are willing to work for a lot less than locals will? Just an idea.

The Issue is that College Graduates returning home and made application to the BVI HSA only to be told they are over qualified. So really what type of qualification is being accepted?
  • resident (15/06/2021, 11:35) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
The government needs to expand the College to include teacher training and health care training mainly nursing. Fire and police are already here. The govt needs to look at these critical areas. Train your people so you wont need to import or suffer a lack of.
