ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Virgin Islands has recorded its 9th case of COVID-19, after several weeks of being coronavirus free. Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) announced tonight Saturday, August 1, 2020.

In a public address broadcasted tonight on television, radio and via social media, the Minister said the imported case was confirmed on Friday, July 31, 2020.

Hon Malone said the individual exhibited only mild symptoms of the virus and has been placed into quarantine at a Government contracted facility.

JvD linked case in SVG returns negative test result

Meanwhile, a previously recorded case recorded in St Vincent and the Grenadines and linked to the island of Jost van Dyke has now been confirmed as negative, the Minister said.

It was previously announced that the individual had tested positive for the virus after flying from the Virgin Islands to St Vincent, leading to a complete lockdown of Jost van Dyke and mass testing of residents on the island.

Hon Malone said the government remains extremely pleased that the SVG linked case returned negative and that the government took steps to mitigate any spread of the virus should that test had been confirmed as a positive case.

He said the positive case, as announced today, is a timely reminder that the Territory is not out of the woods as yet regarding COVID-19 and its fight against the pandemic.

The last confirmed coronavirus case in the Territory was recorded on May 14, 2020, Hon Malone said.

Until we actually wear masks and practice social distancing we are not yet ready, or responcible enough to safely open the boarders. Look around people making all kinds of excuses why they are not wearing masks in public.

    Hon Carvin Malone,

I have a question for you. St. Vincent was not hiding where the young lady came from who they said had tested positive coming from the BVI (*Big Lie* )

How is it that you have not revealed to the people of the BVI where this person came from into the BVI?

St, Vincent health officials wasted no time spreading false information. That young lady was never sick, never had the virus. In fact, they sent her home with her mom and sister. She is well as well can be and is out and about in SV.

Why can't you, Mr. Minister, say from where this new case was impored?

When will this xenophobic back and forth war ever end?.. does it really matter where she from? How is this important?.. what’s important is that we have another active case of this virus and most likely she has been in contact with others and they potentially with others.. we keep foolishly thinking that somehow we are immuned to having this virus in our gates; sadly we are not.. instead of us focusing on nonsense we need to be Thanking God for His Continued Mercies towards us and we keep praying and stop all the hatred!! And let us encourage each other to do what’s right to protect ourselves from this virus for we don’t know when it would show its face on our shores..
As per Dr. Anthony Fauci- to prevent COVID
    1. Wear our masks consistently
    2. Social distance
    3. Avoid closed areas like bars etc
    4. Keep away from crowds or large gatherings
    5.. Wash your hands

Have a plan, put things in place...Without incoming Revenue, how will Civil Servants continue to be paid, how will we as a country pay our loans back, ? we need Job creating activities...We need the incoming revenue to do all of these things. Financial services is coming down a greecy pole,...Leaders have to lead and lead Wisely and courageously ..and stop worrying about popularity and fame..Look at most of thise countries that already open up. Whatever little issue they had, they sort them out, they put things in place, and they are doing well. They prove the earlier you open up, the better it is..U have more time to put things in place and get it right....Leadership is not a fame or popularity game...

(cont).. to all Xenophobes (locals and Expats alike)
You all need to take the blinders off and realize we both need each other..
@Locals: look around, especially in our Health system in our hospital and community clinics.. our nurses and doctors are mainly Locals; Nope; Expats..the Specialist Doctors in hosp are mainly Expats.. we are Blessed to have Specialists like Dr. Bovell, Nehemiah, Batacharya, oyetunji to Name a few and there’s more..these people (Expats) care for us and our families).. when we go to ER 9/10 it’s an Expat. Nurse or Doctor we meet. If we don’t want this, then we educate ourselves in these roles so that our Immigration & Labor Dept.. don’t approve their work permits.. and yes I admit some expats fill roles that Locals can fill which is wrong and we have a right to be angry but again who gives them permission to have these jobs?..We needed some of them after Irma and who knows we may need them again this way or another way..

@Expats:.you are just as bad as locals spewing out the same poison against us and you need us as well for the American dollar..(once I gave someone a ride and that person “in front” of me calling down my people; I had to ask them if they were crazy and if it wasn’t a local was giving them a ride). you make enough money to survive here and still send home to care for your families and build homes in your country, and also at times Some of you do take advantage of our country by taking advantages that are NOT afforded to you Being employed that locals don’t get.. at times the way some of you all behave and treat us though it’s not right on either side We all bring this Disdain against ourselves..So again we all are benefitting from each other in one way or the other.. we all (locals and expats alike) just need to Stop, Do Right all around and Show more love to each other and live better.. for we all claim to know, Love and serve God and God is Love and we that don’t love doesn’t know God..the thing that gets me to is that we are all one race of people.. don’t we have already have enough racism/xenophobia against our race?..

I cannot for the life of me understand why people who hate an entire race of people staying among them. BVIslanders do not hate Expats of any kind. There must be one or two ignorant persons on here instigating nonsense. What I am not surprised about is the way that persons are responding. I have spent numerous occasions on the job, and all over Tortola listening to Expats call down their bosses and coworkers and people from this country as a whole. I chalked it down to jealousy so ignored it, but in the past couple of years I have been answering some of them, especially those who brought there entire families to a country that is so terrible with ugly and vile people? Old people taught me to do not bite the hand that feeds you. It is terrible the way some of them behave. And on the flip side I have many good friends from the Caribbean who knows that God is love even though they call Tortola people lazy when they get ready because the drive for the dollar is not as strong, in my opinion, in BVIslanders. We will not work ten jobs and kill ourselves. But isn't this the country where Expats get to work four different jobs, moving from house to house, yard to yard working and collecting money that the taxing authority knows nothing about? Stop being insulting and ugly to the BVI. God sees and knows all.

One person infected is one to many are you people not watching the news. You talk about opening the boards and I understand everyone is hurting but keep in mind that you guys stay complaining the the hospital isn't any good and would rather fly out for any little treatment. Do you know how many ventilators the hospital have if this virus was to become a real issue for the BVI and knowing for a fact that alot of countries have closed their boards what will Happen..You all should considered if 10 people where to get infected and they had other underline health issues what would happen on that little island. Also you should take a look at neighboring islands like Puerto Rico and the increase cases daily because they have let tourists and Belongers in without any strong guidelines. Come on Tortola and I mean Locals and Expat do better one hand has to wash the other and stop being so against each other because no matter what at this very moment and time all are hurting and stand to lose.
