SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- The BVI Sanatan Hindu Mandir in Sea Cows Bay was a bright spectacle of diyas and fairy lights on Tuesday November 10, 2015 when the Hindu community in the Virgin Islands observed Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights.

Hindus have had a presence in the Virgin Islands for more than 20 years, with the larger population being from Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Others that co-exist among the Hindu Society of the VI are from India, Sri Lanka, among other countries.

There are over five hundred persons practising Hinduism in the Virgin Islands.

“Diwali is a very special occasion for us, very auspicious day. If you can compare Christianity with Easter, the same type of auspiciousness Diwali holds for us,” said Assistant Treasurer of the BVI Sanatan Hindu Mandir, Mr Hemchand 'Andy' Rahaman.

And as part of the observance, the Hindu community held a special programme at its mandir in Sea Cows Bay last evening November 10, 2015 where the general public was invited.

“We are an open religion, we like to enlighten others about it. We have been here for 20 years but it is still not really out there,” added Mr Rahaman.

He also explained that Diwali falls on the darkest night of the year and that it symbolises the overcoming of that darkness.

“Metaphorically speaking, that darkness could be ignorance, suffering and other things that keep people from climbing that ladder of success in both the material world and the spiritual world. So Diwali is a day set aside where they dispel that darkness by lighting lamps. That lamp will signify that spiritual spark which will enlighten us and dispel all the darkness of ignorance, greed, corruption, hatred, malice and replace that with love, peace and harmony.”

Noting that Hindus have been allowed to freely practice their religion in the Virgin Islands over two decades or so, Mr Rahaman expressed gratitude to the Government of the Virgin Islands.

“They allow us to function as a non-profit organisation and they allow us to practice our religion and it has been going smoothly for us and we remain thankful for that and hope that we can be able to grow and have a place of our own in the near future.”

Mr Rahaman noted that the Hindu Society of the VI has done several fundraisers to purchase a piece of land on which to build a mandir. “We are closer than ever to accomplishing that goal.”

To dispel darkness you need the true light, Jesus Christ. Without Him you will still be in darkness. Physical light cant dispel spiritual darkness, you need spiritual light to do that. And darkness cannot dispel darkness.

Typical arrogance of a Christian (or any other religious cult) - your religion is right and everyone else's is wrong. When will you knuckleheads actually realise that your religion is a man-made method to keep the sheep fenced in?

      You speak or True Light?
You should find out what your ancestors considered the "True Light" before they were trashed and tortured mercilessly to be converted to Christianity. Don't speak ill about other's religion. No one is qualified to nullify another religion - Not even the Pope!

Ever heard of the saying: "Square Peg in a Round Hole"? Well, I don't think a person of your caliber would, but this saying best suit your comment.

Jesus didnt even know who his father was, his mother was putting it out with all the local peasants so had to make up a story that she was a virgin, and 2000+ years later people are still dumb enough to believe in the virgin birth, talking snakes, living inside of a whale, creation and that of all the created gods, their one is the real sky fairy. And we wonder why the world is a mess!

There will always be a few Close Minded uncivilized Neanderthals among us....unfortunately, they are still needed in society...for something or the other, however, they do not necessarily participate in a positive advancement in society.
To discriminate against religion, race, origin should have been a thing of the past. Sadly, although slavery was abolished, these discriminatory practices has lived on, for people are being looked at and treated differently based on their religion, ethnicity, origin, etc. Sadly, our Caribbean community is dowsed with this stench of discrimination.

The Hindu faith believes in bettering oneself and being in connection with God and creation overall. My humble
opinion is that is light years beyond and bigger many other human contraptions. Good for them.

You really need to do your research---that religion supports caste systems and discrimination. In a society that is striving for unity it is not the ideal to be harbouring.

Hinduism does not support caste system or discrimination, this was created by man whom by less intelligence misinterpret the teachings to suit his own lacking and hallow mindedness, wise men go to the right source for information with an open mind and does not cling to the negative side that suits his own personality, get your facts correct Justa soul, under the pretext of ALL religion man have made mess, why should the practice of this religion not be harboured, should the Catholics culture be abandon because of the nasty actions on the young boys, NO! let the scums be driven out of society, not true religious practice, turn to your soul.

It is truly sad to know that our people of the BVI are still so uncivilized despite living in a time where information is so widely accessible, we live in a small piece on land that is not even shown on the map, unfortunately a vast majority have not seen and experience the outer world, Hinduism is the oldest religion that exists on the face of the earth yet consider new in the eyes of the uncivilized, It is my humble opinion that unless we have understand our religion or rather what is the basis of religion is, we can never accept others, there is no one path to god, god is so merciful he make himself available to meet us under all circumstances and situation, unfortunately so call Christian do not see it as such, a true Christian would not criticize, the comments made on this blog says a lot of how far behind people of the BVI are.

Sunshine the people in general cannot be blamed for their ignorance,,,,this is a Christian community, the closed mindedness came from the way they were being thought in the churches, within Christianity they are so many sects, if this is not evident to open people minds to understand that God comes to meet us at all levels, under every circumstances and conditions then they surely are being exploited,,,,,,Hinduism and other religion are only different medium to attain god, If a dog sees his master wearing a sari, a suit or a garb he will recognize his master, why can nt we human recognize our master when he comes in different outfitting, this only tells one story, we truly do not know our maker,,,If you take a survey a mass population of the world's most striving countries including India, China, Japan, Shri Lanka just to name a few who's practice stem from Hinduism, what is BVI to compare,,,,,,, Happy Diwali to all my hindu brothers and sisters!!!!!!!

Why do you people of the BVI feel so insecure, anything that seems new to you, you start to feel threatened, the Hindus are peaceful people, the religion and culture is so rich, its one to be admired, these people are doing so much for the community to make a better place for all, remember they have their families and bringing young ones up too, if they do not provide culture and good upbringing for esp their young, the society will suffer,,,,sometimes I wonder if some people think at all............
