ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Even as the VI Festivals and Fair Committee gears up to launch Tortola Emancipation festival tomorrow’s Saturday March 22, 2014, local promoters have joined the bandwagon in casting in their lot to kick start the week.

Tonight at G-Spot, downstairs at UP’s Cineplex, locals will be staging the first ever VI Spring Bling Concert and VI Calypso Dance Queen Competition. “We are doing this all as part setting the pace for the 60th. Calypso is a big part of festival and especially the road march, dancing is a big thing,” one of the promoters told this news site.

The competition was one that has been very well organized and is being done in phases. Four girls have entered the competition which started over a month ago. According to one promoter with all the girls aiming to becoming the VI Calypso Queen 2014, it is been done in three phases for scoring of 100 possible points.

Over a month ago each girl would have had their own YouTube video and for a maximum of 30 point their fans would have ‘like’ the video. “The girl with the most YouTube likes would score as much as thirty points,” said the promoter. Persons can like the girl of their choice up to show time tonight via the link below.

The second stage would be the “Wuk up like a VI girl” that will be on tonight at the G-Spot night club and for this stage the crowd will be the judge. “That would be a free style calypso dance off where the girls get to do their thing in their own style,” the promoter explained.

For the remaining 40 points each competitor would be dancing to two songs, one to be chosen by the organizers as a tribute to Daddy Friday of the Jam Band and the other one of their own choice.

That final segment will be judged by a panel of three judges who are well familiar with the calypso industry in the VI; Boss from the Showtime band, Kylo from the Stylee band and Rancho from St Thomas.

The winner will walk away with a cash incentive and trophy while the others each get a trophy.

“This is something new to add to the 60th celebrations and it takes a lot of courage on the part of the girls to come forward so we want persons to show them lots of positive vibes,” said the promoter. The show kicks off at 10:00pm and according to the organizers for the first time the venue would be sectioned off.

“We have divided the dance hall so the 25 years and older can have their privacy away from the younger crew.”

A long list of entertainers is in line to complement the night of competition. Watch the girls here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UGmOzDbQvEg
