VI airports close due to weather system

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine has been causing the Territory to close for business, as well as forcing the postponement of functions such as graduations.

The approaching weather system has also resulted in the closure of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island and the Auguste George International Airport on Virgin Gorda.

“The BVI Airports Authority wishes to advise the travelling public that as a result of the expected passage of Tropical Storm Isaias, the Terrance B. Lettsome and the Auguste George International Airports will be closed from 12:00 noon on Wednesday, July 29,” a press release from the BVI Airports Authority stated.

Government offices closed for business at 1:00pm and Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had urged the private sector to also consider the safety of their workforce.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine

The weather disturbance has been bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Virgin Islands but at 2:00pm remained Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, according to the National Hurricane Centre.

The term “potential tropical cyclone” is used to describe a disturbance that hasn’t formed into a tropical storm or hurricane yet but brings a threat of tropical storm or hurricane conditions to land within 48 hours.

The Virgin Islands remains under a Tropical Storm Warning.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.
