ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A cashier from Virgin Gorda is facing criminal charges for using the bank card information of a Colombian man to purchase herself a pair of Gucci earrings, among other things.

Jakeya Fergus, who is just shy of her 19th birthday, made an appearance at the Magistrate’s Court in John’s Hole on Tortola, charged with three counts of theft

She was granted $40,000 signed bail and was not made to plead to the offences on Monday, September 9, 2019.

Prosecutors said Fergus obtained the information on the bank card when the complainant paid for items in a local supermarket.

Using the information, she was able to purchase the pair of earrings worth $200 and tickets to Virgin Gorda for the price of $30.

She also paid for food at a restaurant in the Valley on Virgin Gorda, among other things.

‘Card belonged to my boyfriend’

Prosecutors said Fergus allegedly said the bank details were that of her boyfriend.

In other cases, when she was questioned about the lack of a physical card, she blamed her clumsiness for forgetting it at her home.

“You always forgetting your card girl,” one ferry boat employee reportedly told her.

Suspicious charges

Meanwhile, the court heard that on February 7, 2019, when the Complainant attempted to withdraw cash from the ATM, the machine indicated that there were insufficient funds in his account to process the transaction.

Prosecutors said the Complainant then visited the main bank branch located in Road Town to make a complaint.

It was then that he was informed of the number of charges to his bank card.

The matter was reported to the police who then launched their investigations and arrested and charged Fergus who had also signed the receipts after each purchase.

The purchases were made between January and February this year.

Lawyer Patrick D. Thompson represents Fergus, who is scheduled to return to court on Thursday, September 12, 2019.

She is a stupid thief... Still she had a conscience she was taking small amounts with success.. Why did she go complaining to the bank knowing what she was doing.? Hmmm... When she try to withdraw money and get insufficient funds.. That was the time to quit... Then again what get into her to do this in the first place...

She did not go to the bank, he (complainant) did because he didn’t get any money while trying to withdraw money from his account

Based on the story, she did not make the complaint- the rightful owner of the card did.

lord god lmao the complainant is the real owner of the credit card not the girl. the complainant went to use his card, it said insufficient funds, he went to the main branch to make a complaint and an investigation was launched.

The good book says, thou shall not steal. Look how you mess up your life. This will follow you thru out your life. You just lower your chances of many opportunities. When looking for another job this will come up and trust me you want this. No one wants a thief in their place of business.

I rebuke this in Jesus’s name. Regardless of what happened, you have no right to speak that into anybody’s life. Persons have done worse in and outside of the BVI and have changed/recovered. Speak life into the young lady’s life and pray for change instead of condemning her.

If she had steal to buy food for her kids and herself you could say poor lady but stealing to buy fake name brand. I would prefer use my God given gift than to steal so terrible. I’m sure she can find a job, everyone come to the bvi and find job why can’t who live here do the same.
