CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI - Voters will go to the polls, today Tuesday, November 20, 2018, one last time this year, to decide the fate of Governor Kenneth E. Mapp, who is being challenged by former Labour Commissioner, Albert Bryan Jr, bringing to a close, what has been one of the most exciting campaign seasons in the United States Virgin Islands’ (USVI) history.

In the USVI’s electoral system, in order to avoid a run-off, someone running for Governor must receive 50 per cent, plus one vote, and in the November 6, 2018, General Elections, that was not achieved.

As such, the two top candidates, Governor Mapp and running mate, Lieutenant Governor Osbert E. Potter, along with Albert Bryan Jr, and running mate, St Croix Senator, Tregenza A. Roach Esq, will face off today.

Dirty campaign

The past two weeks have been overshadowed by downright ‘nasty’ campaigning, court actions and hand wringing for other candidates—who ran for Governor—to announce endorsements.

The polls will close at 7:00 PM this evening and many residents of the Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke) have travelled to the USVI to vote and also took part in the run-off early voting, a few days ago.

Public opinion suggests that the Mapp-Potter team, will have a struggle to be re-elected, however, if St Croix’s Governor Mapp's base comes out, it can put him over the top.

Virgin Islands News Online, along with sister paper, VI Consortium, will be the first to bring coverage of the results
