VI CONSORTIUM

FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- Mark A. Kragel, who worked at the US Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) for a decade as its deputy legal counsel, is no longer employed at the authority, WAPA Communications Director Jean Greaux has confirmed to the Consortium.

In a brief statement to the publication, WAPA said, "Mark Kragel is no longer with the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority."

Comments Mr Kragel, who is white, made last week ignited a firestorm online. He had called the Black Lives Matter movement a "domestic terrorist organisation," and went on to use an expletive against BLM.

"Absolutely. Spoiled mentality of fools have zero idea of what it takes to be an officer. 99% don't have the guts to even think of taking the risk that the men and women in blue do everyday. BLM is a domestic terrorist organization. F*ck BLM," Mr Kragel posted. The comment was deleted, but not before screenshots were taken and shared widely online, especially on Facebook.

Calls for Kragel's head

The pushback, first started by a grassroots movement that included random USVI residents who took issue with the post, grew swiftly until it reached the top of government. On Monday, June 22, 2020, Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr told the Consortium that he had spoken to WAPA officials to share his disdain. He said Kragel "has to go."

Delegate to Congress Stacey E. Plaskett followed with strong comments of her own: "The Deputy Legal Counsel of WAPA needs to be fired. Period," Ms Plaskett wrote on her Facebook page.

"He does not represent our government, our community, the Virgin Islands. His vitriol cannot be in anyway tolerated particularly when it is done during work hours. This is a place of love and respect."

She added, "And if he sues, when have we been afraid of a fight?"

A petition to remove Mr Kragel from the authority has garnered over 3,100 signatures.

Senators pile on the pressure

Senators piled on as well: Kragel’s employment with WAPA must be terminated immediately,” said Senator Donna A. Frett- Gregory. "We absolutely cannot allow someone with racist views to continue to hold a position of this much influence and power in our community."

Senator Jenelle K. Sarauw said, “This is not the time for patience but for action against racism. The slavery question may have been settled, but the impact is not. We struggle with the effect of colonialism in our government, politics, education, and society. It affects our economics."

Senator Allison L. DeGazon said, "As an Afro-Caribbean woman myself, I was appalled to read such distasteful and offensive commentary from the Deputy General Counsel of our locally owned Water and Power Authority. I believe the persons working for such institution should reflect the values and best interests of the community it serves, in this case, the people of the Virgin Islands."

Senator Athneil Thomas said he was outraged with Kragel’s “insensitivity and disrespect."

“For this individual in his statement to liken the BLM movement to a ‘terrorist organization’ is a clear indication that his despicable spirit supports the unnecessary killing of black individuals,” Mr Thomas said.

“The US Virgin Islands, with a majority population of black people, welcomes people from all places and all races to live within our community whom we accept and treat like family,” he added.

Black lives matter is a terrorist organization. People are supporting what they don’t understand and what they are funding aren’t for the black people. Support the slogan not the organization don’t mix it up

I get your point BLM was hijacked from its inception (by non black people I may add) but that doesn't seem to be the point he wished to articulate. He was more interested in sympathizing with the corrupt cops that continue to abuse their power and murder unarmed civilians. He is just doing what whit people do deflect, ignore, and use redhearrings to direct to conversation away from its relevant points.

I find it interesting that the KKK has never been classified as a terrorist organization despite the fact that they have do nothing but terrorize and kill people for decades. but BLM hasn't done 1/10 of the things that the kkk has done but suddenly its label a terrorist group.

So I guess you are saying that it's Ok for whites to continue to oppress blacks? Your tone of expression expressed your heart...But Remeber there's a God above who sees and is aware of all the evil...As Solomon puts it, "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil" (Ecclesiastes 8:11).When humans think they have gotten away with sin, their hearts become calloused to it, and they ...Also the word of God declares, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place to wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

Crazy times. Whatever you say about anything "black", if is deemed by them as negative and if you are white, you will by default be called racist.
    Cancel culture, Orwellian times.

Let's not pretend the system of racism and so called white supremacy has not existed, or does not exist. We all know that such pretense would be a denial of history and a sounding call for the maintenance of these systems. You are within your rights to be in denial and continue racist practices, but be bold enough to say that's who you are and what you stand for. The fact is that people of European descent are programmed to feel superior to anyone that doesn't look like them. It is up them, the Europeans/Caucasians, to address this programming within themselves and break the cycles of so called supremacy. It's time to start viewing Humans as just that...humans. Not colors or ethnicities or regions.

No one is saying all lives don’t matter. Black Lives Matter is all about FOCUS, not exclusion. Black lives are being emphasized (focused on) because of the history of systematic racism that has existed for over 400 years and the way blacks are being murdered by police for little or no reason (in comparison to whites). Can you honestly say it’s the same for whites? White People need to know that Black Lives Matter because you seem to feel that only yours do. If white people truly believed all lives matter and acted as such, there would be no need for a Black Lives Matter movement today. Whether consciously or unconsciously, many white people (it’s never all) get offended or angry by blacks trying to focus on themselves, make things better for themselves by attempting to get white people to acknowledge the injustices towards Black people that are in place and have been in place for centuries. Injustices they created, purposefully designed. No one ever said other lives don’t matter, but that’s your way of dismissing and trying to discredit a much needed movement. Also you’re mixing race with ethnicity and nationality. Latinos or Hispanics, for example, is not a race, you can find different races within these groups. And yes their lives matter, too.

Men, women and children good day let's all breathe a sigh of relief that that Shady Character has left the building!!! We are all left now to pick up ourselves and strengthen our areas of churches, homes, schools, work, busneses and as well as our surroundings to make peace and tranquility throughout our islands and Caribbean people's to make right our wrongs within our personal self and our daily life. The "400" years of oppression and racial injustices we have been tried for is over. Let's conquer what seems to be thrown to us now with dencentsy and accountability with prays that will overcome the negatives. Let's all try to move forward on -- to make a more better meaningful and productive day today and tomorrow -- for our new generation is which is here now to make a brighter tomorrow. Let's know that All races matter!!!! And not just one. Remember no Man, Woman or Child is and island by themselves. We need a community to help raise us all. All in the Society makes a Village regardless of what race, color, Creed and religion you may be. And two hands always clap not one. God bless you all. Be good, true and be you. I'm out.

I hope this man is no longer in the Virgin Islands breathing the refreshing air of the Caribbbean Islands. He has indicated by his behavior who he really is. And note there are many more like him in the Territory in disguised as Tourists and visitors. These white supremacists come here undetected as contractors and consultants seeking to undermind our society largely because they are embraced as citizens all because they come from the mainland; and allowed to function and do business with background check. What happen to the case of the black woman in St. John who was raped and left for dead by five white men? What happen to the black women who was recently chased by a white and even stoned? Is the investigation still on-going? They are allowed to come here and do as they pleased and get away with it. Remember how they try to block a VI Resident from getting to his property because the believe that East End belong to "WHITES"
St Croix wake up! and Open Your eyes... Many of these White Supremacists are here at "LIME TREE" working with qualifications and being given top jobs...Are we sleeping
They are increasing in number buying every bit of property from natives. I guess you didnot know they are being supported by so called "Home Financial Agents" and Real Estate Agents who seek to purchase peoples' homes by force...
They are the ones hired to take care of housing relief programs who mascarade as so-called FIMA and Federal Agents and we never check their credentials or backgrounds because of the colour of their skin "WHITE" until their frud and criminal activites are uncoveredl yet our local contractors are bared from receiving a contract...

Koffkoff you are a major RACIST. Are White people not allowed to move down there? I thought that you were supposed to be good decent people that embrace everybody, despite their skin-color. I guess you are no better than what you complain about. Just so you know, you are fueling the divide that exist between White and Black people. Stop throwing gas on the fire and try some nice cool island water. Why don't you try and embrace them and get to know them. GEEEEEZZZZZ stop with the HATE!
